Unexpected signs from the vehicles can surprise any owner. Some signs can irritate anyone. It would become like a headache if such signs arise in luxury cars like Audi. One of such sign that here I’m gonna discuss is rotten egg smell from cars. The passengers may not able to enjoy a luxury travelling experience if such smells arise from Audi, it can make them displeased. So you must have to do something that can prevent further smelling of the car.
What causes a rotten egg smell from Audi?
Rotten egg smell is a very pathetic smell generally caused by the sulfides. Sulfur is present in the fuel, gear box and also at the exhaust system. Some issues in their system can cause the sulfur to burn and produce this pungent smell.
Leaking or old transmission fluid
Transmission fluid lubricates and increases the life of the gear box. It consists of sulfides. But sometimes, due to wearing, the transmission fluid leaks out internally or externally and gives a pungent smell like rotten eggs. The leaked fluid can form puddles under the car or in the car. If the fluid stagnated in one area, then it would lead to a rotten egg smell. Even if the transmission fluid is not leaking, but if it has become too old in the gear box, then it can smell like rotten eggs. So the transmission fluid has to be checked and changed regularly.
Faulty catalytic converter
The catalytic converter converts the sulphide gasses from the engine byproducts to harmless compounds. So with time, the catalytic converter has a chance of getting clogged with various toxic impurities by converting the exhaust gasses. As it gets fully clogged, the release of exhaust gas from the tailpipe is restricted. The catalytic converter also fails to do its work correctly. So the catalytic converter gets over heated with more pressure and the sulfides present in it produce such a gas that has a rotten egg smell. A clogged catalytic converter can make your car cabin smell like rotten egg severely.
Faulty fuel pressure sensor
The fuel pressure sensor monitors and regulates the fuel flow pressure to the engine. But sometimes, the malfunctioning of the fuel pressure sensor can lead to high pressure of the fuel, which increases the amount of fuel in the engine cylinder. Due to poor combustion process, there will be lot of unburnt fuel in the exhaust gas released from engine to the catalytic converter. This would make the catalytic converter to malfunction and release a lot of sulfuric gasses that has a rotten egg smell.
What to do if your Audi smells like rotten eggs?
A rotten egg smell from your Audi cannot make you drive peacefully, it is never good to have such a smell in your luxury car. So you have to check and diagnose the problem.
First you need to check the transmission fluid in your car. Check if the fluid is low or different color. If the fluid is low, then there might be some leakage of the fluid. Look at the ground underside of the car. Check if there is any puddles formed under the car. Collect the fluid by a paper and check its color. If it is transmission fluid, then it would appear red or dark red or brown in colour. Have the leakage fixed to stop the smell. If the transmission fluid is having a dark color like brown or black, then your fluid has become old and dirty, you have to change the fluid.
Next to check is the fuel filter. If the fuel filter is dirty or clogged, then it would lead to poor combustion process. The fuel filter has to be changed on regular basis. Next to check if the fuel pressure sensor and the catalytic converter. If any of them are found faulty or damaged, then it has to be replaced. Have these components replaced by a trusted mechanic.
Conclusion
If your car is smelling like rotten eggs, then you should not delay in diagnosis. Immediately take your car for checkup and repair. Such smells can disturb you highly. Have you Audi diagnosed by a mechanic so that you can enjoy the ride at your Audi.
