You graduated and a new life is ahead of you. Comparing to boring classes, work will be fun! Ok, let’s stop dreaming and get to reality. Here are some things that you need to know about work but no one speaks of it.

The world is unfair

You can be promoted for nothing or get fired because of someone else’s mistakes. If the first one is weird but pleasant, the second one is unfair and even painful. Going against your management is usually an unfair fight.

Ambitious upstarts exist not only at colleges

They also graduate and also go to work. So, different mean setups that bothered you at school may continue at work. All big companies have flatterers, bosses’ favorites, charming liars, etc.

Being a professional is not enough

The ability to fulfill task is half the work. You’ll have to learn how to present yourself and to build relationships with colleagues. Otherwise you can forget about promotions. At some point your personal qualities may become more important that your professional ones. Professionalism is very important, though. It is still better to be a good professional but not to be a very social person than otherwise. For example, I have a friend who doesn’t like any social gathering and small talks. Nevertheless, she got a great job at the essay proofreading and editing service due to her professionalism and excellent skills.

The first impression counts

It doesn’t mean you won’t be able to change it. But the first impression means a lot, especially with the business people. You never know if you’ll get this change to change it. So try to impress people straight away. Everything counts: how you look, how you talk, how you move, etc.

Incentive is everything

Even if you don’t know the subject well, volunteer to manage a new project. On one hand, you will have a chance to learn something new. On the other hand, your bosses will notice your readiness to work and to learn.

Avoiding people is not an option

There will always be someone in the office that you don’t like. Maybe you will have to cooperate with people you cannot stand. And you’ll have to fulfill the tasks no matter how unpleasant it is for you to work with this person. The ability to do that with no troubles shows your professionalism.

Having a mentor is important no matter what you do

Mentors can tell you how the business actually works, answer your questions, share their experience and help you grow professionally.

It is hard to come to success alone

Even if you don’t like working in a team, you have to be able to do it. If you eventually want to build your own business, you’ll face the need to form your own team of specialists. So, team working skills are always good.

Ethics is a loose concept

Depending on a situation, context and your goals, the notions "ethical" and "unethical" can mix up. Drop a thought that the world is all black and white. If your understanding of ethics differs from the company’s norms you should better look for other company to work for.

There is always not enough money

Spending the whole salary during the first week is not an option. You never know whether you are going to get an advance next month, whether they lower your salary or fire you. So, try to save some money right after you get your salary.

So, you see that there are some things that professors don’t tell you at colleges and that you have to learn yourself. Hopefully this article helps you a bit in your new work. Good luck!
