What is a VOC?
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs for short, are a myriad of naturally occurring and artificially manufactured chemicals found everywhere. These compounds are considered volatile because they vaporise at the earth’s natural temperature and release molecules into the air. Common industrial solvents like trichloroethylene (TCE), fuel oxygenate like methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and by-products of chlorination in water treatment like chloroform, benzene, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, xylene, and 1,3-butadiene can be termed VOCs.
, VOCs are crucial in the manufacturing of various household products like cleaning liquids, arts and crafts products, air fresheners, cosmetics and deodorants, office printers, and copiers. They form the components of many synthetic materials, such as plastics, rubbers, adhesives, paints, etc. They are widely used in the production of pharmaceuticals and fuel for transport and heating.
Studies show that VOC concentrations are more likely to be higher indoors than outdoors. Most VOC sensors are continuously triggered during the night. This is a result of a spike in carbon monoxide (CO) levels from industrial emissions, water heaters, furnaces, and even indoor products like emulsions, wood burning stoves, tobacco smoke, etc. While in storage and usage, materials like paints, varnishes, cleaning products, disinfecting products, etc. release organic compounds.
Short-term exposure to volatile organic compounds can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation. Long-term exposure, even at very low concentrations, may damage the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system, and can even cause cancer. Therefore, accurate sensing of VOC levels is critical for protecting people, and the environment, and optimising industrial processes.
