Anyone looking to buy a new mobile device must have at least pondered once on the question- what to buy- tablet or mobile phone?

By mobile phone I mean the smart phones. The market is flooded with smart phones and tablets from all leading electronic product manufacturers. Smart phones were invented to give a user the usual mobile phone services, along with computer like functionality.

Tablet PCs were invented to give the user more computer features in a smart phone. The difference in price of the two is not very great and a user has to choose between buying a high end smart phone or a low end tablet. Some might even prefer splurging that little extra to buy the higher end tablets.

For me smart phones win the competition hands down. It offers the usual mobile phone services like talking and messaging and at the same time enhanced with other computer-like functions. Smart phones can access the internet using wireless signals from mobile phone carriers through GPRS and can also use the wireless signals in the form of Wi-Fi.  Smart phones use a mobile web browser to access the internet. They run programs called apps designed by third parties. In a nutshell, smart phones offer just about everything. Users can check an email, check postings to Facebook, play games like Angry Birds and do a lot more on his smart phone.

Smart phone is easy to carry and can be handled using a single hand. It can be carried in the purse or pocket and thus is always available at an arm’s reach to do myriad things. Even the smallest tablets needs to be carried in a pouch or a backpack. Another feature of smart phones which is better than a tablet is connectivity. A user will still come across areas where there is no wireless network and in such a scenario tablets fail to get the user connected. With smart phones there is always cellular network which helps users to remain connected all the time.

Smart phones allow users to make and receive calls from virtually anywhere. In a tablet users can make voice calls only when they are in a wireless network but smart phones allow users the facility of voice calls at all times. Another benefit of a smart phone is that it allows users to send text message from anywhere without having to be logged in to any particular messenger. It is much simpler to send a text message rather than start a tablet, log in to a particular website and then send an e-mail.

Smart phones are mobile phones first and portable computing devices later. It is a very versatile mobile device and can serve the purpose of a phone, a music player, an e-reader, a camera, a GPS device and just about anything else that users will need.

The latest smart phones available in the market serve all these purposes. And the latest smart phones being built around dual-core processors serve the purpose of both a mini tablet as well as a phone.
