This week in power: War crimes charges and Diaz wedding

A roundup of the most talked about political and global stories in the Jewish world this week:
Palestinian claims

The Palestinians are joining the International Criminal Court to "pursue war-crimes charges against the Jewish state — a risky, high-stakes move that brought threats of retaliation from Israel and criticism from the U.S," reported the Associated Press last week. "Turning to the international court at The Hague marks a major policy shift, transforming Abbas' relations with Israel from tense to openly hostile. The ultimate goal is to pressure Israel into withdrawing from the territories and agreeing to Palestinian statehood." The Nation summarized their case as follows: "The real question therefore becomes: Does the PA have the political will to pursue a case against Israel, despite pressure from Israel and its Western allies not to do so? If past behavior is any indication, one must be skeptical: the PA has a track record of failing to use international legal mechanisms to achieve Palestinian objectives."
The news brought out an array of strong opinions. "For many years now, the Palestininan leadership has shown that it places victimhood over statehood," said The Jewish Week in an editorial. But that's not all. "As far as the Palestinian Authority is concerned — and the media, the EU, the UN and human rights groups — the only 'war crimes' are being committed by Israelis, and not by Arabs who are killing, torturing and displacing tens of thousands of Palestinians. And all this is happening while the international community and media continue to display an obsession only with everything connected to Israel, said Khaled Abu Toameh at Gatestone Institute.
Why a Jewish wedding?
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden got married on Monday at a Jewish-themed wedding which befuddled outsiders because neither member of the wedding party is a member of the faith. It featured all of the trimmings, too: "After the vows, Madden requested personal time with Diaz, during which they entered a private room for about 30 minutes, asking not to be disturbed — a Jewish wedding ritual known as Yichud,"reported Us Weekly. "I’m not really sure how to feel about this. Is Good Charlotte a good Jewish band? Or Is Judaism just the new kale?" asked Anne Cohen at The Jewish Daily Forward. "Who knows why they did it? Who cares. I wrote an entire article about it, but that doesn’t mean that I am thinking about it at all," added Vered Weidd at Jewish Business News.
