She's the Keep-Calm-and-Eat-Cupcake bride, who'll wear a peach gown with pride, and flaunt her nude lipstick in a sea of red. Here's how she's giving the loud, hyperventilatingbridezillas a huge complex.

There's a new bride in town - she's minimalistic, bypasses the big wedding, doesn't fall for season's trends, is economical and environment friendly with her choice of clothes and jewellery, and is a bit of a rebel. But at the same time, she has a quiet, calm composure that will fascinate you. She's everything that a traditional bride isn't supposed to be. A perfect antithesis of a bridezilla, she is the anti-bride - the fuss-free, carefree woman, who doesn't like making a big deal out of her wedding.

The anti-brides like to keep it simple, and take decisions in tune with their life beliefs.Shinjini Chawla bucked quite a few traditions at her recent wedding. "I didn't wear a nath, I chose a white lehenga for my sangeet and refused to put mehendi till my shoulders as my family wanted. These were small ways in which I decided to do my own thing. One of my friends wore a lehenga made with real flowers. Another designed her own lehenga because she didn't want to spend `90,000 buying one!"

BUCKING TRADITION

Says designer Suneet Varma, "These days, so many brides are rejecting red zardozi for lace and navy blue gowns. The wedding is the first `big impression day' for the bride and she's defining it her way - be it in her attire or the way she carries herself. This new anti-bride wants something young, light and beautiful. She wants to hold a glass of champagne and dance away. Brides are no longer going into their new life with their eyes shut, be it the ceremony or the relationship. They are expressing their femininity in unique ways."

Sandhiya Loganathan, founder of the blog Black Book for The Indian Bride, says, "I know a bride who wore a cap-like veil, much to the horror of traditional people around her. One of my friends had a beach wedding, where she came in with the bridesmen, and her groom walked in with the bridesmaids - a break from the conventional tradition." Loganathan says one needs to be gutsy to be the anti-bride but the idea is not to shock anyone. She advises, "Take people in confidence and be very clear about why you want what you want."

THE DIY BRIDE

There has also been a steady rise of more intimate, less fanciful weddings of late. Some brides are writing their own ceremonies while others are their own wedding planners. Say wedding ceremony singers, Dr Freedom and Leela, "Today, the brides want to understand what each ritual signifies. They are involved far beyond their choice of make-up, guest list etc." Author Kathleen Hughes in her book, Antibride Wedding Planner, writes, "Your wedding comes with expectations, rules of conduct, procedures and prescriptions of behaviour. Being an antibride, you don't want that kind of wedding. Being an anti-bride is about having your wedding your way; not being bogged down by rules and regulations."

Says wedding planner Sonali Thakore, "This is the DIY bride. She comes up with her own ideas. From invitation cards to honeymoon, her approach is intimate and personal. She wants real flower dresses and at times, will do the wild thing that no one expects. She won't ask for 600 wedding pictures and choose 60 off-beat ones. She could be getting married on the beach, on the mountain top, even at a historical monument. The idea is going to a destination, inviting fewer people, keeping costs down. The keywords for these brides are: fun and simplicity."

The guests are requested not to upload pictures of the bride and groom on the so cial media without their permission. A e lot of brides in India are also having a `trash the dress' moment. (a photography trend in the West where the elegant dress of a bride is ruined in dirt, water or on the beach and the moment is captured with stylish photography). Says photographer Amrit Vats, "Wedding photography is also going through an `anti' moment. The storyboard is changing and becoming nontraditional. You'll see less pictures of rituals, family and more individual laughter shots and candid moments."

STATEMENT TRINKETS

Anti-brides don't follow the `hot bridal look' of the season. An antibride picks a style that suits her. Says make-up expert Komal Gulati, "They don't wear too much make-up, keep away from back-combing and high buns. They don't want forehead bindi either. A little blush and gloss, and she's ready to go. She wants dewy skin and a natural glow. Most of them opt for just one statement jewellery!"
