While firearm police fatalities are often more notable, traffic fatalities offer a greater statistical threat to officer safety. The partnership between Ford and Telogis is designed to lower the number of lives lost in traffic incidents. The telematics built into the Ford’s Crew Chief powered by Telogis will help monitor law enforcement agencies.

The 2015 Ford Police Interceptor has a 365-horsepower 3.5L EcoBoost engine, powertrain, Advancentrac with RSC, police-tuned suspension with all-wheel drive and specifically designed for pursuit driving. There are also unmarked/detective/administrative vehicles. The Special Service Police vehicles or non-pursuit offers a 2.0 liter I-4 EcoBoost engine with 249 horsepower and maintains all the safety features with more efficiency.

The goal of the partnership with the Telogis is to improve the safety programs for police departments. Telogis provide vehicle occupants and those back at the station information about the vehicle and driver’s behavior. Every vehicle in a fleet can be seen at once as well as information about a single vehicle. Rules for driving can be enter into the telematics and reports and notifications are made about vehicles, the fleet, a driver or team. Information about idle time, fuel and oil levels, hard braking, speeding, hard swerving, maintenance and other driver and vehicle information can be sent in real time. It also offers weather and traffic information in the office and out in the field. Individual vehicles or entire crews can be tracked and current and historical data logged. Telogis telematics can keep track of all information from payroll to team management to maintenance reporting.

Data on the entire fleet let those at the office know what’s happening with the fleet, what is costing, and how to improve fleet performance. Since the idea is to improve public safety and decrease number of fatal traffic incidents, telematics about hard braking and acceleration can help identify aggressive and unsafe wasteful driving. It may also indicate accident avoidance. Such behavior is wasteful, causes the vehicle to emit more harmful gases and brake damage, or may be a sign of aggressive driving. Such monitoring can identify dangerous drivers who ignore safety precaution and guideline and endanger lives. In this way telematics help protect the public. Telematics help manage dangerous drivers and allow the implantation of safety programs and coaching sessions to help staff comply with safe driving standards. Ford and Telogis are helping to protect officers in the line of duty and the public interest.
