The WTEFLAC was a private accreditor of TEFL and TESOL providers, but what did it set out to achieve, and what lies ahead?

The World TEFL Accrediting Commission (Wteflac) has announced its closure. During that time it had accredited many TEFL and TESOL providers and provided an information resource for anyone looking to teach English as a foreign language. With the organization now closed, it’s worth looking at what its goals were and whether they have been achieved.

Bringing transparency to the sector

The number of people looking to study English as a foreign language has surged in recent times. For some it’s a chance to finance travel overseas. For other’s it’s a new way to make a living – one that can be done at home thanks to online courses. One thing’s for sure, with tens of thousands of people wanting to learn English overseas, they will not be short of opportunities.

First, though, they need a qualification. TEFL courses (teaching English as a foreign language) are recognized around the world. They provide an excellent grounding in the structure of English, ways to control classes and teaching techniques.

TESOL courses focus on teaching English to speakers of other language. It’s a good course to take it you’re planning to teach courses to immigrants who are looking to set up a life in the west.. This helps you build the skills needed to teach English to people who may not share a common language.

The rising demand for courses has seen a flood of providers entering the marketplace. Unfortunately, not all of them offer a reputable service leading to a recognized qualification. People looking for courses on the internet are vulnerable to exploitation and may see their hard-earned money going to waste.

The WTEFLAC sought to give these people independent and verifiable information that could help them make a more informed choice.

Raising standards

The accreditation process set a benchmark for the kind of standards providers were expected to meet. This was all set out in a code of conduct which served as a clear criteria for judgement. Having this in place created a benchmark that helped to raise overall standards.

In some cases, a provider looking to become accredited would have to review and improve their service provisions in order to make the criteria. In other cases, the process of accreditation would prompt them to reflect on their operations and identify ways in which they could improve. In addition to that the company also had an extensive website which offered information and guidance for providers and students alike.

In this way, they worked hard to give all parties involved the tools they needed to succeed. It boosted overall capabilities in this sector and provided customers with the transparency and protection they needed in what could often feel like an unregulated online environment.

Although it has now closed its doors its work helped to improve this sector going forward. However independent accreditation will be important in providing users of all kinds the reassurance of knowing providers can be trusted.
