Andre Onana defends Alejandro Garnacho Over Social Media Post

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has stood up in support of teammate Alejandro Garnacho after the 19-year-old was accused of using social media posts with potential racial connotations. Garnacho posted a picture with himself and teammates celebrating Onana's penalty save against Copenhagen by adding two gorilla emojis above it on X (formerly Twitter). Unfortunately, this post was quickly taken down.

Onana Defends Garnacho

Andre Onana of Manchester United rushed to defend Alejandro Garnacho over concerns that the teenager may face an FA ban following a social media post he uploaded celebrating after Cameroonian goalkeeper Savet saved an injury-time penalty during Tuesday night's Champions League win over FC Copenhagen, as well as two gorilla emojis included as caption. Unfortunately for Onana however, that post has since been deleted on X (formerly Twitter).

The FA has informed Garnacho of potential racial connotations with his posts and requested his observations. Garnacho has yet to respond; however, Onana posted a message in support of Garnacho on his Instagram Story Thursday evening.

Emoticons may seem harmless enough, but the FA has in the past punished players who use Spanish terms that could be perceived as offensive in the UK. Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani was banned for three games and fined PS100,000 in 2020 for including "gracias negrito", which translates to "thanks little black", below an Instagram post from one of his friends.

Onana Insists No Further Action Should Be Taken

Matt Hargreaves, United's new head of negotiations, conducted an intensive analysis on Onana's contract. This included moving away from large basic contracts that can lengthen player careers while offering more incentives and add-ons.

Andre Onana had a difficult start to his Manchester United career but made amends with an incredible penalty save against Copenhagen in Tuesday's Champions League tie.
