Weddings in Wales: Sparkling wedding day for couple who love Bonfire Night

If you tied the knot like Jonathan Smith and Rhian Hermann we'd love to share in your celebrations.

To take part, just fill in the simple form at the end of this story. And if you're from the South Wales Echo area, you will be featured in our newspaper, too.

It doesn't matter where you married, as long as one of you is Welsh or you live in Wales.

This week's couple live in the Thornhill area of Cardiff:

The couple

Jonathan Smith, 39, from Thornhill an insurance trainer at Admiral Insurance Services Ltd, and Rhian Hermann, 31, from Taff’s Well who works for the emergency services in Gwent. They now live together in Thornhill, Cardiff.

How they met

Jonathan and Rhian were both working for Admiral at the time and Jon sent Rhian an email asking her for her number.

The proposal

Jonathan surprised Rhian by making an appointment for them to design her engagement ring together.

She said: "He collected it several weeks later, without my knowledge, and on a very relaxed Saturday morning stroll along Ogmore beach he proposed. I had no idea he was planning it."

Jonathan said: "I managed to fool Rhian by telling her there was a problem with the casting of the ring. I felt guilty when she seemed disappointed it would not be ready by the timeframe they had given but it was all part of the surprise."

The venue

The wedding ceremony took place at the Minstrel Hall, Miskin Manor Hotel, Pontyclun, and the reception took place in the Glyndwr Suite, Miskin Manor, on Saturday, November 8.

The wedding

"The theme was simple but classic and very relaxed," said Rhian.

"The day was celebrated with all those who had supported us while growing up and a handful of very close friends."

The couple both love Bonfire Night which influenced their choice of date and allowed them to have sparklers in their photographs.

Rhian wore an elegant dress by Sincerity and Jonathan and his groomsmen wore navy suits with berry-coloured cravats.

"We both love music so picked The Vinyl Eyes playing live music to dance the night away to," said Jonathan.

Their wedding cake was created by Jonathan’s mum and the flowers were provided by the same florist as Rhian’s mother had used for her own wedding 39 years before.

On their wedding invitations Jonathan and Rhian asked guests to write down their favourite songs and all the songs were then added to a wedding playlist.

When the band took a break and when they finished their set all the songs were played.

"It was a great way to include our guests in our night," said Jonathan.

The honeymoon

After a night at the Miskin Manor, the newlyweds headed off to Symonds Yat to enjoy a meal and night away.

Their main honeymoon will be in May and they are heading off to Riviera Maya, Mexico.

"We can’t wait, as a holiday to Mexico in 2013 is where we first discussed getting married," said Jonathan.
