Jewelry is worn as decoration, obviously we would consider it a lot more decorative to wear a gold ring than an iron one because it is rare. It is I guess in a way, a status symbol. They are also very malleable and easy to work with and are also non-toxic or non-reactive (relatively).

Gold and Silver are more durable than other base metals both in terms of tarnish, wear and value. While jewellery made from copper, brass etc. devalues and becomes tarnished in time, the price of gold and silver will always be maintained and will increase in time because they are precious metals. They are also status symbols due to their value, and more malleable than cheaper metals. Not only we used them for making jewellery, but their value and durability have been noticed as early as the Minoans & Myceneans, not to mention the dynasty of Ur in Mesopotamia, some 5500 years ago.

India is the largest consumer of gold in the world. India's love affair with gold has been since ages. Roughly 700 tonnes or about 33% of the total gold mined in the world is consumed in India. That makes India the largest importer of gold.

The fundamental reasons for buying gold jewelry including gold bangles, gold bracelets, gold rings are rooted in Indian culture especially during weddings. Lot of alteration has happened to our traditions but gold purchase on the occasion of wedding has not changed much. Though the newer generation is not too fond of wearing or flaunting gold jewelry, the demand for gold jewelry has not gone down. We end up demanding 950 tons of gold every year.

Though many of us may not understand the inflation angle of it, intuitively we all know that it is a great wealth preserver. Wealth is preserved when the value of investments grow at a rate more than the inflation rate. Gold precisely has done that consistently for ages. Hence Indians find gold to be a safe and simple investment avenue to beat inflation. The other alternatives like real estate and equities are out of reach or complicated for an average Indian and so they keep accumulating gold. After all gold is wearable wealth too.

Gold should be an important part of a diversified investment portfolio because its price increases in response to events that cause the value of paper investments, such as stocks and bonds, to decline. Although the price of gold can be volatile in the short term, it has always maintained its value over the long term. Through the years, it has served as a hedge against inflation and the erosion of major currencies, and thus is an investment well worth considering.

That's the reason gold manufacturers are increasing day by day not only in India but all over the world. Whole sale jewellery manufacturers in Mumbai have increased considerably making gold rings, various designs of gold products available for people according to the variations of occasions in India.
