Types of Hydraulic Cylinders Design Principles

Posted: Jan 17, 2015
Hydraulic cylinders (also known as linear hydraulic motors, are mechanical actuators that are used to provide a unidirectional force via a unidirectional stroke). They have many applications, especially in construction equipment (engineering vehicles), civil engineering, and manufacturing machinery. Cylinders are utilized to change fluid power in mechanical motion.
Hydraulic Cylinders Design Principles
Here are the different types of hydraulic cylinders design principles:
- FLANGE MOUNT
Flange mount is among the strongest and most rigid ways used for mounting. With this kind of mount, very little allowance is there for misalignment. Whenever long strokes are needed, the free end which is opposite the mounting must be supported, to avoid sagging and probable binding of the cylinders. When cylinder is utilized in the thrust load application, blind end flange must be used. For the tension application, rod end flange mount should be utilized.
- TIE ROD MOUNT
While using tie rods that are extended on rod end, the most excellent application is tension load. For thrust load applications, the hydraulic cylinder tie rod must be extended on blind end of cylinder. Hydraulic cylinder tie rod mounts tend to be suitable for many applications, however it must be noted down that they are not as rigid as the flange mounted cylinder and generally require added support for longer stroke applications.
- SIDE AND LUG MOUNT
Side or lug mount cylinders provide quite a rigid mount. This kind of mount can stand slight misalignment if the cylinder is completely extended, but as piston moves towards the blind end, tolerance for misalignment reduces. It is vital to note down that if cylinder is used correctly (without misalignment), mounting bolts either are in straightforward shear or tensions without compound stresses.
- SOLID FLANGE MOUNT
Solid flange mount tends to be the strongest and the most rigid technique of mounting the cylinders. Industry standard for this kind of mounting covers only 1½" via 8" bore cylinder.
- PIN AND TRUNNION MOUNTS
The pin and trunnion mount cylinders require provision on both the ends to-pivot. This kind of mounting is intended to carry out shear loads and needs the pivot or trunnion pins held rigidly by closely fitting bearings for the whole pin length.
- KEY MOUNTS
The key mounts retainer plate is an excellent mounting option intended to add up stability to the foot and side mount cylinders. Retainer plate is now extended below mounting surfaces of the cylinders. This extension might be fit into milled key-way, removing the needs for locator pins or welded keys.
- DOUBLE ROD END CYLINDER
The double rod end cylinder is available in each mounting style except for the clevis mount and fixed eyes mount. It must be noted down by the designers that whenever a double flange mounting is needed, there will be the tie rod nut protruding on at least one end.
