Impact of School Uniforms on Student Behavior

An example of this approach is observable in the Bossier Parish School Board in Louisiana, which implemented a uniform policy in 2001 to elevate test scores and mitigate disciplinary issues. Nevertheless, these compulsory policies governing students' dress have led to legal actions alleging violations of free speech. Students argue that such policies are unconstitutional as they infringe upon their freedom of expression. Up until 2014, there have been nine lawsuits, with school districts prevailing in almost all instances, barring one. Research produces varied results; some studies point to a reduction in incidents of misbehavior, while others suggest an increase in student suspensions. Simultaneously, certain studies demonstrate no significant change in student misbehavior, contributing to a diverse understanding of the impact of quality school uniforms on student behavior. For instance, a 2010 study conducted in a sizable urban school district in the Southwest disclosed that the implementation of uniforms had no impact on the number of suspensions for elementary school students. In contrast, a 2003 study, utilizing a comprehensive national dataset, asserted that elementary and middle schools with uniform policies encountered fewer student behavior problems. However, it noted a higher frequency of misbehavior in high schools. Notably, even when evidence is available, educators' perceptions may diverge from it. In a study involving educators in 38 North Carolina high schools, 61% of responding principals and assistant principals believed that the introduction of school uniforms reduced instances of misbehavior. However, the actual data revealed no change in crime, violence, or suspension rates. Similarly, research on the effectiveness of school uniforms in enhancing student attendance and achievement presents conflicting findings. While one study suggests that uniforms lead to increased student achievement and attendance, another study indicates a minimal impact on academics at all levels. Additionally, it finds little evidence of attendance improvement for girls and a decline in attendance for boys.

3. Implications for Policy

What Does The Absence Of Consistent Research Mean For Policy Implementation?

In my perspective, it does not imply that schools should avoid implementing such policies. Rather, it emphasizes the importance of educators clearly defining the goals they aim to achieve by mandating school uniforms. The introduction of mandatory school uniform policies often entails associated costs, with lawsuits and community reactions consuming valuable time and financial resources. The expected benefits, like reduced discipline problems, increased attendance, and improved academic achievement, may not be exclusively attained through the simple act of wearing khaki and blue. However, other advantages may exist, such as assisting a school in establishing its identity through a uniform look. School uniforms could also serve as a symbol of the institution's commitment to academic excellence. The crucial takeaway is that a clear understanding of purpose and expected outcomes is indispensable before students don their uniforms in the morning.

I believe that school uniforms might be one component within a comprehensive set of programs and approaches that a school adopts to instigate change. However, when considered as a standalone measure, it implies that schools are searching for a simplistic solution to intricate and challenging problems. It's crucial to acknowledge that school uniforms alone cannot bring about sustained or large-scale change.
