Ward’s 2015 awards: EcoDiesel V-6, HEMI® Hellcat V-8 find place

Posted: Jan 18, 2015
Ward's named two Chrysler products in its list of the ten best engines for 2015: the Chrysler 3.0L EcoDiesel DOHC V-6 and the 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat. The Chrysler 3.0L EcoDiesel DOHC V-6 has broken new ground for power and fuel economy. According to the U.S Government, EPA mileage rating, the Chrysler EcoDiesel delivers 28 miles per gallon on highway tests. The 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat is a leader among Chrysler's latest supercharged engine entries. The 6.2-liter HEMI provides 707 peak horsepower, and it is the most powerful V-8 engine that the Chrysler group has produced thus far.
The EcoDiesel offers a long-sought combination of heavy-duty hauling power and advanced fuel economy. With 240 horsepower and 420 foot-pounds of torque, this V-6 can handle heavy hauling and loads; the EcoDiesel offers outstanding mileage for its class. This engine achieves its power and economy balance through advanced materials in its construction. It uses a graphite, iron and aluminum engine block and head. The main advantage is its power production; the V-6 EcoDiesel produces more power than advanced V-8 models which burn far more fuel.
Ward’s rates the EcoDiesel as a quiet, powerful engine, similar to luxury car diesels. The powerful engine works well with the advanced eight-speed TorqueFlite transmissions. A major advance in addition to the fuel economy is the emissions control and reduction system. Chrysler can sell the EcoDiesel in every state. It offers innovations in many areas that in combination produce energy efficient operation. Chrysler upgraded the fuel pump and fuel injectors. The pump was changed to work with a high-pressure common rail system, and the injectors use a shaping technology which provides more efficient burn at low throttle and RPM settings. The EcoDiesel will be available in the Dodge RAM series beginning in early February, 2015. Chrysler expects truck buyers to respond enthusiastically to the fuel and power advances of this lightweight diesel truck.
The Hellcat V-8 delivers a peak power rating of 645 foot-pounds of torque. It will be the power plant in a line of the most powerful muscle cars in the Chrysler Group's long and distinguished history of high-performance vehicles. Innovations in handling and power must go hand-in-hand, and Chrysler has engineered ride and steering options that will cover all conditions.
The development of the Hellcat led to intensive re-engineering in the model lines that will add a new high power engine. It was a sign of advancement when Chrysler had to revise Street and Racing Technology testing protocols because the new engines exceeded the pre-existing test parameters. Chrysler re-evaluated every aspect of performance; new braking innovations, axle tolerances, and cooling systems were only a few of the needed changes. The manual transmission needed an external oil coolant and a stronger clutch; the brakes needed re-design in front rotors and a new style of calipers for the rear brakes.
The engine will be available in the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT. In this line, the 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat engine can be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission or an improved six-speed manual transmission. Difficult terrain and high-speed driving on steep inclines and slopes will be easier with the additional gearing settings. Chrysler added improvements to axles, and braking systems to integrate the overall performance with the extra grades of power. Stronger axles and larger brake rotors and calipers each help balance safety, control, and stopping power with the robust Hellcat power plant. Handling is another vital area for change and balance. The Challenger SRT will offer a three-level user-controlled handling setting. Labeled as street, road, and racing, drivers can adjust the critical aspects of the ride, cornering and steering to suit driving style and road conditions. With top speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour and powerful acceleration, the Challenger SRT will justify its substantial price tag to motor enthusiasts.
