Selecting an assisted living home or community can be tough. Nobody likes being treated like a child, and it can be a challenge to find a community that offers a good balance between providing assistance when it's needed, and allowing for independent senior living when it's not. At the end of the day, you need to trust your judgment first and foremost, but these five points will direct you to a good senior community.

Sufficient Staffing

One of the biggest problems people face in assisted living communities: scarce staff. It's hardly assisted living if you can never find someone to help you out when you need it. If you walk into any assisted living communities to find that the staff is a bit sparse, you may want to ask a few questions, namely: where is everybody? Adequate staffing is priority number one.

The Good Neighborhood

A "good" neighborhood means different things to different people. We all want to live in a safe area with little crime, but for some, a good neighborhood means a little rural spot on the outskirts of town. For others, it means a more suburban surrounding.

Independent Living

Most senior citizens are emotionally and mentally mature adults, and they deserve to be treated as such. Independent senior living means being able to come and go as you please, being offered activities but not being made to participate in them, and being able to write your own daily schedule and not be told when to go to bed, when to eat and so on. Many senior living centers will hand new tenants a Bible-thick book of rules and regulations. Look for one that doesn't.

Pet-Friendly

People with pets tend to be happier and live longer. Some senior centers disallow pets or allow them with a lot of restrictions. Even if you don't move in with a pet, you might want one in the future, so it's important to find a home with pet-friendly policies.

Features, Amenities and More

Finally, it's important to find a senior home with some desired features. This might mean a swimming pool or it might mean a home that's a short walk to the grocery store, it could even be a home that offers a complimentary buffet every day for lunch. This factor is simply: whatever is important to the person moving in.

Don't be overwhelmed by the sheer range of choices out there. Just check these points off, use your judgment and find a great assisted living community.
