Stage lighting is an important part of almost all stage performances. Without proper lighting; you cannot enhance any stage effect properly. Different types of stage lighting are used in theatre, dance, opera and other performance arts and these lights impressively convey the meanings.

BASIC FUNCTIONS OF STAGE LIGHTING:

Here are four basic functions of stage lighting:-

• Establish the sense of time and place.
• Compose the scene; especially in visible sense.
• Emotionally convey the mood.

TYPES OF STAGE LIGHTS:

BASIC LIGHTS:-

Different types of lights are used for stage; these lights add the wonderful effects. Parcans and beam lights are famous for travelling shows because these lights are light weight and are easy to carry. The word ‘parcan’ comes from Parabolic Aluminized Reflector (PAR) lamp and provides the basic lights and the external casing which is particularly important for ‘can’; here means “PAR can”.

Scoops are other important basic lights and are usually used for color washes. These are ‘flood lights’.

VARIABLE LIGHTS:-

Ellipsoidal lights are famous stage lights and have variable components. These stage lights have the ability to change the focus of the stage and make (stage) it soften, brighter or sharpen. Spot light is another type of stage light and as its name reveals that this light is mostly used to spot an actor. These lights are also known as ‘followspot.

LED AQUARIUM LIGHTS:-

These are high intensity lights but these lights are little bit cheap and easy to afford.

QUALITIES OF STAGE LIGHTS:-

Stage lights play vital role in the performance of any stage play. These lights have few certain controllable properties which are as under:-

INTENSITY:-

Through stage lights we can reflect the amount of emotions of performer. Lights reflect the background; make up, costume and setting of the stage.

COLOR:-

Multiple gels are used for the creation of colors in stage lights. There are three variable aspects of colored lights: hue, value and saturation.

i. HUE:

Hue refers to the common colors like red, green and blue.

ii. VALUE:

Value of color means the lightness or darkness of the color.

iii. SATURATION:

Saturation refers to the intensity or purity of the color. The combination of these colors produce endless lights effects.

DIRECTIONS THROUGH STAGE LIGHTS:-

We can divide stage lighting in four basic directions; front, side, back and down. These all four sided lights are essential for any stage performance. The success of any stage performance is utterly depending on these lights. These lights become helpful to change the mood of the audience.
