Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
Posted: Jan 25, 2015
2015 is slated to be an exciting year for car lovers as the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat will be hitting the streets. According to drivesrt.com, it will be "the most powerful, quickest and fastest sedan ever." PRNewswire reports that the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT features a 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat V-8 engine, 91 percent of which is brand new and which is a redesign of Dodge’s previous engines. This model also features a segment-exclusive Torque Flite eight-speed automatic transmission, which allows for rear wheel drive intent, and fully electronic controls. This powerful engineering allows this model to boast of 707 horsepower under the hood and blow away its competition.
Not only does the model contain some of the world's most powerful and innovative machinery, but also it has an NHRA-certified quarter-mile elapsed time of only 11.0 seconds. This vehicle can reach top speeds of 204 miles per hour and goes from 0-100 in less than 13 seconds, making it incredibly formidable in terms of pure acceleration. This model is a muscle car, pure and simple, and the only four-door of its kind. According to the President and CEO of Dodge and SRT Brands, Tim Kuniskis, the Dodge Charger SRT "is a multidimensional phenomenon... in a class all by itself." However, its most impressive feature may not be its power or speed, but its fuel-economy: the EPA has awarded this model a fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg.
The Dodge Charger SRT's remarkable fuel-economy rating doesn't just stop at 22 mpg on the highway. The sedan has also earned the fuel-economy ratings of 16 mpg in combined-cycle driving and 13 mpg in the city. For such a powerful machine, these are promising numbers. Not only does this model fuel economy mean that it’s a sensible buy, but it also promises that buyers will get the most bang for their buck.
In order to determine the fuel economy, the EPA placed the Dodge Charger SRT in a variety of tests. First and foremost, they bring the sedan to a dynamometer, which is a machine designed to simulate a variety of driving environments. A professional driver will operate the vehicle on the dynamometer through a series of driving routines designed to simulate "typical" highway and city routes. By determining the energy required to move the rollers of the dynamometer, with adjustment for wind resistance and weight, the EPA can begin to estimate fuel-economy rating. The rest of the testing comes from a hose connected to the vehicle’s tailpipe during the duration of these tests. This hose collects engine exhaust and the carbon within this engine exhaust is measured for fuel burned. This method is more accurate than using a fuel gauge, and combined with the vehicle's energy output, the EPA is able to determine the vehicle's fuel-economy rating.*
