Where To File Tax Form 7004
Posted: Jan 25, 2015
IRS Form 7004 is a form that is meant to be used for businesses, corporations, trusts, and some partnerships to extend their tax deadline. This generally has three different parts, and those parts depend on the type of tax extension that the business is trying to use. Everyone who files this form has to finish Part III of the form. Sometimes Part I and Part II have to be filled out as well, depending again on the type of extension that is being filed to begin with.
If you are a business owner and you are not able to file your tax returns on time, then you can get this tax extension by mailing a fully completed Form 7004 to the right address. Mailing to the correct address, though, is more complicated than it sounds. Depending on your assets and where you are filing the tax extension form from, you may have to mail it to a different location than you would normally do. This is something which can be extremely confusing if you have ever done it before. Compounding this even more is the fact that you may have to file the form in a different location based on the type of situation that you are in.
Where to File the Form
The basics of the filing of the tax form for business tax extension are to file the form with the Department of the Treasury of the United States. Specifically, to the Internal Revenue Service of the United States. The address, that most of the forms will be mailed to, is the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Ogden, Utah 84201-0045. There are, of course, some situations where the form will have to be filed to a different location. Here are just a few of those situations:
- If you are trying to extend your due date and you have total assets of less than $10 million, you will file with the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Cincinnati, Ohio 45999-0045. If it is more than $10 million, then you will be using the standard address.
- If you are filing a 1041 or an 1120-H, then you will need to file at the Ohio address. This is true for most states on the east coast of the United States, but the west coast and some of the southern states will need to file at the Utah address.
If you are ever confused about where to file the form or if you have additional questions, consult the IRS website. They have comprehensive write-ups on the subject and have plenty of information for all situations. It is also important to remember that this tax form does not extend the payment of tax which is due, only the time for the filing of the return itself. The business still has to estimate the tax that is going to be owed and pay that ahead of time via the online services that the business tax extension system have in place.
