Each vehicle rolls out of a BMW factory is the perfect blend of comfort, luxury, and sportiness. Powerful engine line-up and efficient drivetrain system are some of the other notable features of vehicles manufactured by this leading German car maker. There is something special about BMW cars that can’t be expressed in words. However, no matter how reliable these vehicles may seem… they are not without their flaws.

Today’s blog post discusses some of the drivetrain issues BMW owners might face and things they can do to prevent something like that from happening. So, without further ado let’s get started…

BMW Drivetrain Issues: A Comprehensive Discussion

Look… the term ‘drivetrain’ doesn’t represent any particular part of your BMW. The term, in essence, represents a set of components; located in between the transmission and the wheels. These parts work in a close co-ordination with each other to manipulate engine power before conveying it to the wheels. That’s all…

A technical deformity in one of your BMW’s drivetrain parts can contribute to all sorts of drivability issues- which if goes undiagnosed- may lead to expensive repairs. What can go wrong with the drivetrain, you asked??? Well, many different things… Listed below are some of the reasons why your vehicle’s drivetrain may act up.

#1- Defective drivetrain parts

Be it the transmission unit or differential, a deformity in any part of the drivetrain system will have an adverse impact on your BMW’s overall functionality. Your vehicle may even enter the limp mode because of this reason. You better trace the issue to its root before it leads to expensive repairs.

What to Do About It?

Ensure the upkeep of key components of your vehicle’s drivetrain parts to make sure that they work in the most efficient manner possible. Keep track of fluids used in the transmission, differential, and other important parts of the drivetrain system and in the event that a glitch is noticed, reach out to the service center to have it fixed.

#2- Overused spark plugs

No matter how trivial these tiny devices may seem, it is because of these components that the engine get to generate the mechanical torque required to propel the vehicle forward. The efficiency of your BMW’s drivetrain will reduce significantly if these tiny devices act up.

What to Do About It?

As with any other car parts, spark plugs your BMW engine come equipped with have maximum serviceable limits. Not replacing defective or carbon fouled spark plugs on time can contribute to all sorts of performance issues including drivetrain failure. It is therefore advised that you replace your BMW’s spark plugs periodically.

#3- Clogged fuel injectors

A Fuel injector, if fails to deliver the right amount of fuel into the cylinder at a precise time of the combustion cycle, the engine may misfire… Yup, you read that right. In addition to cylinder misfire, clogged fuel injectors can contribute to a wide range of other issues including stalling, sputtering, and yes… rough engine idle. What’s more- defective fuel injectors may make your BMW’s drivetrain incompetent.

What to Do About It?

Don’t ever ignore your BMW’s fuel injectors… keep track of their functionalities. If it occurs to you that one or more of your vehicle’s fuel injectors are clogged up, consider cleaning them. Consider replacing them if it comes to it.

#4- Defective fuel pump

Combined effort of the fuel pump, relay, fuel filter, fuel rail, and fuel injectors is what makes fuel delivery to the engine possible. Should the fuel pump acts up, the engine won’t receive the requisite amount of fuel. This is something that can contribute to performance issues in a vehicle including drivetrain-related issues.

What to Do About It?

There are many different things that you can do to ensure the upkeep of your BMW’s fuel pump. If it plays up, contact the nearest European service center to get it repaired/ replaced.

The End Note…

  • Drivetrain is the reason why torque generated by the engine gets delivered to the wheels in a very controlled manner.
  • Take all necessary measures to ensure the upkeep of key drivetrain parts of your vehicle.
  • If your BMW is displaying a ‘Drivetrain malfunction’ warning, don’t take it for granted. Have your vehicle checked by a certified professional to trace the problem to its root and have it fixed.
