The eligible occupations for which you can work in Canada are listed within the National Occupational Classification (NOC). These NOCs are based on a TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities) category.

TEER are group occupations based on the general training level, education level, work experience, and responsibilities required for a particular job in Canada.

TEER Categories in the NOC System

The NOC system has six different TEER categories – from 0 to 5. Each TEER mainly tells you the education and training you need for a specific job role.

Further, TEER also considers the experience required for entering the field and the difficulty of the job duties compared to other job roles.

For example, if you move from TEER category 2 to 1, it will demand more formal education. But from TEER category 5 to 4 – there will not be that much of a difference, and can be accomplished with on-the-job training and work experience gained over the years.

TEER categories show how people usually get into different jobs. Sometimes, there are many ways to get a job, but TEER chooses the most common way that employers recognize. They make this choice based on the job and how hiring standards are changing over time.

Find your TEER Level

If you’re applying for Canada PR visa from India, you first need to know your NOC code under the 2021 system before jumping straight to finding your TEER level.

If you are already familiar with your NOC code under the old system, use Statistics Canada’s Correspondence Table to find a new one.

Once you have found your NOC code, determine your TEER level by seeing the second digit of your 5-digit NOC code.

For instance, the 2021 code for Web Designer is 21233. The second digit of this code is 1, which means this particular occupation falls under TEER category 1.

Note that while your occupation may be eligible for Canada’s Express Entry, you have to meet additional minimum requirements to apply for Canada PR.

• Major Group 72: technical trades and transportation officers and controllers, excluding Sub-Major Group 726, transportation officers and controllers

• Major Group 73: general trades

• Major Group 82: supervisors in natural resources, agriculture and related production

• Major Group 83: occupations in natural resources and related production

• Major Group 92: processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors, and utilities operators and controllers

• Major Group 93: central control and process operators and aircraft assembly assemblers and inspectors, excluding Sub-Major Group 932, aircraft assemblers and aircraft assembly inspectors

• Minor Group 6320, cooks, butchers and bakers

• Unit Group 62200, chefs

• Canadian Experience Class
