Symptoms of hemorrhoids can be alleviated within a week of their appearance by managing it effectively using some home remedies. In case the hemorrhoids persist even after these measures or if there is severe bleeding and pain, then professional medical attention will need to be provided.

Simple measures that should be used in order to effectively manage hemorrhoids include:

  • Using topical treatment measures including over the counter creams and suppositories for hemorrhoids containing
Hydrocortisone. Comforting pads containing a numbing agent such as witch hazel can also be used.

  • The anal area should be soaked in lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes. This procedure should be conducted at least two to three times every day when the disease is in its course. Sitz baths also prove to be really helpful and they are available at most chemist and drug stores.
  • The anal area should be kept scrupulously clean through bathing and showering. The skin around the anus should be cleansed gently with water warm in temperature. Soap should be avoided as it might prove to aggravate the problem. Any alcohol based perfumes or wipes should be avoided and the area should be dried gently, preferably using a dryer.
  • Refrain from using dry toilet paper to clean the anus. Moist towels and wet tissue paper which does not contain any perfume or alcohol should be used for cleaning the anus.
  • Swelling can be effectively managed by applying cold ice packs or compresses on the anal region.
  • Oral medications can be used to relieve pain. Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and other analgesic drugs can be used to provide temporary relief from pain.
  • Take steps to soften the stool such as eating more of fibrous foods, including plenty of water and fluids in the diet and taking over the counter fiber supplements such as Citrucel and Metamucil.

Depending on the severity of the hemorrhoids if they persist after these measures, a general or a specialist doctor may need to be visited. Specialists may include gastroenterologists, colon surgeons and rectal surgeons who carry out both examination and treatment procedures for cases of bleeding and sever pain associated with hemorrhoids.
