Self-tapping screws are widely used in various manufacturing and construction projects because of their ability to create threads in materials like wood, metal and plastic.

However even with their versatility and ease of use, many common issues can arise during their application. It is important to understand these issues apart from knowing the self-tapping screws v/s self-drilling screws differences to help ensure successful and efficient fastening.

1. Stripped threads: The first issue is stripped threads where the self-tapping screw turns without tightening. Also, the threads in the material are damaged or worn out. The issue is caused because of over-tightening of screw, using wrong type of screw for the material and poor quality or worn-out screws.

The solution for this issue is to choose the correct self-tapping screw for the material. Also, avoid over-tightening of screw. Use a torque limited driver to control the amount of force applied. If the threads are stripped one can repair them with a thread repair kit using a larger diameter screw to create new threads.

2. Cracking or splitting material: The material around the screw splits or cracks during installation. This can happen when the screws are very large for the material, or material is too dry or brittle. Even driving the screw too quickly or with excessive force can cause this issue.

The solution is for brittle or hard materials pre-drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw diameter to reduce the risk of splitting. Also, driving the screw at a slower speed and with moderate force minimize the stress on the material.

3. Damage of screw head: The screw head becomes stripped or deformed. There can also be difficultly in driving the screw. To trouble shoot this issue using high-quality, properly fitting driver bit that matches screw head type is advisable. It is advisable to invest in better quality screws that are engineered to withstand higher torque without deforming is important.

4. Screws not holding firmly: This results in loosen of screws over time. The connection is not stable and secure. The causes can be incorrect screw length or diameter, inadequate thread engagement and poor material quality or condition.

The solution for this issue is to ensure screws are long enough to engage sufficiently with material providing firm hold. If material is weak or damaged, reinforcement is necessary. Also, for softer materials it is important to use of appropriate anchors to provide added holding strength.

5. Difficult to start the screw: The screw slips or moves around on the material surface. It is also hard to get the screw to bind into the material. This is caused because hard or smooth surface makes it tough for screw to catch and also incorrect angle.

The solution for this issue is tap a small hole or use a centre punch to create a dimple for the screw to catch. Drive the screw at the straight angle to ensure it bites into the material effectively.
