Effectual methods and approaches to attain sea water desalination
Posted: Feb 10, 2015
Water is one the most precious gifts on the earth. There is no substitute to water. That’s why the water sources like rivers, seas and oceans are important to every living being. But the continuous flow of the water also accumulates various salts and other effluents to it. The presence of salts, dissolved solids, dirt, coarse materials, etc. in the water makes it vulnerable for direct consumption. Hence, various methods for sea water desalination evolved.
There are various methods of desalination like filtration, distillation, reverse osmosis, use of water softeners, etc. Some of them are described below:
Filtration: Sand filtration uses a layer to remove suspended particles from the water passing through it. The pores present in the layer are obstructed with impurities separated from the water passed.
Ultra filtration is another method in which suspended solids of high molecular weight retain and low molecular weight solutes pass through the membrane.
Reverse Osmosis method: This particular sea water desalination method is the most sought upon for water purification. The application of contaminated water to pass through semi-permeable membrane with applied pressure filters out the salt and dirt.
Water softeners: The procedure involves the specific ion exchange. It involves the process of replacement of calcium and magnesium ions by sodium ions. The sodium does not choke the pipes like the presence of calcium and magnesium in the water. The contaminants present increase the hardness of water and also effects the water-involved machineries. Hence, the water softeners diminish the hardness of water.
Distillation: It is the process in which desalination can be done through evaporation and condensation. The contaminants are separated from the liquid mixture in this method.
Mixed Bed Ion exchange: This method is a water polishing method to get demineralized water. It is the process of strong acid cationic and strong basic anionic exchange resin. Some of its application includes: Condensate polishing, micro-electronic cleaning, pharmaceuticals, etc. This method is generally after the reverse osmosis method.
Water treatment plants have gone mobile with the usage of container water purification plants. These are used to generate huge amount of clear water for extensive usage. The mobile containers include components like static mixers, control units, dosing panels, etc. They are customizable too according to the choice of buyer. The containers come in the standard ISO sizes of 10ft, 20ft, 40 ft and 40 ft HQ. The customer can specify brandings and color for the container and also add up the features like ACs, insulator, single or double access doors, etc. They help in sea water desalination after following the different methods. They serve in disaster areas, military, camps, schools, farms, etc. The easy transport of these containers to multiple remote locations gives them an edge over the normal water treatment plants.
Water treatment is a basic requirement for every purpose. Drinking clear water i.e. free from cysts, bacteria, viruses, coarse materials, salts is important for health. Desalinated water is important for agricultural uses. As a whole, the treated water is beneficial in every purpose.
