Valmet is introducing two new calender roll covers, expanding its range of roll cover solutions. The new Valmet Calender Roll Covers, CL-W and CL-S, combine exceptional wear resistance with superior load-speed durability and impact resistance. Thanks to advancements in material technology, these covers offer the longest intervals between regrindings, even under the most demanding calendering conditions in soft and multinip calenders. In addition to graphical papers, they are suitable for specialty papers and container and packaging boards.

"Valmet Calender Roll Cover CL-W offers the best wear resistance, extended running times, excellent barring resistance, and high cover surface stability. The primary goal in developing CL-W was to enhance wear resistance, and it has been proven to be exceptionally high in both laboratory and mill conditions. For instance, at a mill producing light-weight coated (LWC) paper, the roll change interval increased up to fourfold," states Tatu Pitkänen, Global Technology Manager, Roll Covers and Maintenance at Valmet.

"On the other hand, Valmet Calender Roll Cover CL-S has been designed to improve robustness and provide the best impact resistance for operations under harsh conditions. It offers a smooth and elastic nip contact. Our research and development team focused on enhancing impact resistance by combining polymer technology with the latest material additives to increase elasticity and impact strength in the composite structure. This reduces the risk of sudden cover damage, dents, or surface marking. The longer lifespan of the cover has been demonstrated, for instance, at a paper mill producing supercalendered (SC-A) magazine paper, which previously experienced frequent cover damages due to high nip stresses," explains Rob Stapels, Global Product Manager, Roll Covers and Maintenance at Valmet.

Opting for Valmet Calender Roll Cover CL-W or CL-S results in cost savings due to longer calender roll run times, which reduce the frequency of roll changes and grinding costs. The overall costs are also lower thanks to the improved cover lifespan. The wear-resistant CL-W can help alleviate production bottlenecks related to barring or shutdown intervals, while CL-S can enhance product bulk, leading to potential fiber cost savings. These improvements contribute to better time and material efficiency in production.
