Nowhere in the world is the society so much tolerant to different religions as in India, a fact which sometimes amazes the world as well as gives uniqueness to the Indian culture. Since the start of civilisation in the Indus valley, which was spread out mostly in the Indian subcontinent, there have been proofs of many sects of people living in harmony in the same region. Medieval period is also replete with examples of people from far off countries like Mongolia, Middle East, Europe and America, coming into India and making it their home. Till the 20th century, until the time India was independent from any foreign rule, there were invasions by various foreign based rulers, who tried to set up their kingdom. Along with them, arrived people, who started settlements in India. Portuguese, French, English and Mughals were the major forces which aimed at settlements in Indian subcontinent.

  • India’s past is replete with invasions and settlements by people with varied religious beliefs

Many people, who arrived along with these invaders, started their settlements and went on to live in harmony with the local communities, absorbing their culture and participating in various events related to Indian religions. Since the Indian festivals and Indian rituals are integral part of every Indian religion, people enjoyed and celebrated these events with full grandeur. Festivals like Holi, Dusshera, Diwali, Ramzan, Pongal, etc are very much famous in India. During these festivals, the true colours of Indian secularism are evident, when people keep aside their religious differences and congregate to cherish the beautiful moments of the Indian religions and their festivals. This goes on to show the strong cultural practices in the country.

  • From India and its temples have generated religious beliefs and sentiments

Some of the oldest religions in the world have evolved from Indian soil, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and the country has also given lots of Indian rituals to the world. Taking forward the fervour of the Indian religion are the numerous temples in India, which are the forms of manifestations of the religious sentiments and beliefs of the masses. Throughout the country, the Indian temples have a special place in the day to day life of people and these become the centre of celebrations during various festivals. These Indian temples also have a contribution towards the growth of tourism in India. Due to their structural and architectural brilliance, the temples in India are visited by tourists from all parts of the country, as well as from outside, for their religious sentiments and the marvellous architecture.

  • Pilgrimage places adding to the bonding between people in India

As an extension of the Indian religions, the pilgrimage places in India stand out. Secularism in India and the sacred sentiments towards religions is clearly reflected in the millions of people coming to the pilgrimage places in India throughout the year. Celebrations of Kumbh Mela, where millions of people visit for their holy bath, are nothing but the belief in Indian rituals and the force of the power of Indian religion. There are places of pilgrimage for Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians, as well as few other Indian religions. Every day, these places have hordes of people coming down for paying their reverence towards the gods, which goes on to suggest that the Indian rituals, religions and the belief systems have bound the entire country.
