All-New Voltec Propulsion System to help Chevrolet Volt be more Efficient

There is exciting news coming from Chevy: announcing the new propulsion system for the Chevrolet Volt. This new system is not just a re-vamped version of the current version. Electric Range

Chevrolet has beefed up the electric range of the battery cells with NMC/LMO chemistry from LG. This change resulted in an increase in battery storage limits by 20% over the previous cell capacity. With the improved storage capacity, Chevrolet was able to decrease the number of cells from 288 to 192. The Voltec range extender is operational with regular unleaded fuel.

More Power

Many changes have been made to the propulsion system including the reworking of the drive unit to accommodate two clutches instead of three on the two motors. This also led to the smaller housing unit for the components within the engine space. The 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine is direct-injected and has a high compression ratio over the previous model, which allows you to go anywhere without having to worry about having enough power in the Chevrolet Volt.

Drive Unit

Redesigning this unit has resulted in a five to twelve percent rise in efficiency and weighs in at a hundred pounds less than that of the previous model. This was accomplished by lowering the amount of rare earth elements that are used in the magnetic system of the engines. One engine contains no rare earth metals, and the second engine contains a reduction of 60% in weight over the previous model engine. The use of two motors working simultaneously has added to the power of the vehicle when accelerating, while also increasing fuel economy and creating less vibration in the motor making it run quieter.

Less Noise

To combat the concerns of a loud engine when it is working hard in rough situations, Chevrolet has adjusted the size of the engine. With intentions of reducing engine size by half, it was soon realized that in strenuous circumstances the engine became loud. The answer was to build an engine that is 60% the size of the previous model. This allowed for the needed power without straining the engine causing it to increase in volume regardless of the engines propulsion needs.

Better Fuel Economy

With lighter engine components, this new unit boasts a 12% rise in efficiency. The battery system is thirty pounds lighter, yet has more storage capacity than that of the previous version. Overall, there has been a hundred pound reduction in the total weight of this new Chevrolet Volt which will surely increase fuel efficiency enormously.

Although Chevrolet has not yet released the mileage numbers for this exciting new Chevy Volt, they are promised to be higher than the first series Volt. Owners of the new series can look forward to mileage readings that exceed the current 35-40 mile charge range. The actual numbers will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show to be held in Detroit, Michigan.
