Usually the reason a nursing home or assisted living facility has come up as an option is because of the timing. It can be hard to know when is the right time to begin considering it, but it is often far too obvious when that time has arrived. Often times it is an injury or a medical emergency, or maybe constantly forgetting important thinks like taking medications are common reasons why family realize that a loved one may need some help. For many families, the idea of moving a loved one to a senior living facility comes too late.

Despite the severity and importance of senior health, many senior living facilities offer a very laid back environment, much like a vacation home. There are many great amenities and features that are available at many of the nursing homes in the area. These features are designed especially for their residents and are designed to help residents focus on the positive aspects of living there. Senior homes place a large focus on social interaction and engagement. The facilities are designed to offer common spaces, group dining and other social settings to ensure that seniors are getting the most from their social life. This is especially helpful if your loved one is reluctant to comply with the move. Here are some things you can do to help a loved one adjust:

  • Talk to them about the social events that are set up for residents at the facilities and the fun things that will be available for them to do and be a part of.
  • Make sure they take advantage of the opportunity to meet fellow residents, enjoy games and crafts, have meals together, and take part in other activities offered with the home senior care and nursing home set up.
  • Make sure they understand and are familiar with the layout of the facility so they feel comfortable and at home there.
  • Highlight how important their care is and how great it is that they can have 24/7 care, get the medical help they need, and not live alone.
  • Help them decorate their rooms as they would their own home, let them have their photos, books, and the little touches that can make the place theirs.
  • Anything else that can make them more receptive to the idea of a nursing home and more interested in moving into an assisted living facility.

Moving a loved one into a nursing home, home senior care program, or assisted living facilities can be a challenging and very emotional time for you and your loved. However, with the right approach and a little bit of planning the process can be made much easier and less stressful for everyone involved. See for yourself what Smyrna senior living can do for your loved one!
