What are the Key Highlights of the ITEP Program?

The four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) has been launched by National Council for Teacher Education, across 57 Teacher Education Institutes. The IETP is being offered for the academic year 2023-25 across India.

As per the notification of the Integrated Teacher Education Programme, in 2021, IETP will be a four-year dual major undergraduate degree, imparting Bed programs for BA, BCom, and BSc.

The course was conceived with a crucial objective to prepare teachers for and align their competencies with the new school structure that symbolizes 5-3-3-4, Structure, Foundational, Middle, and Secondary. This new structure came into existence as part of NEP2020 and has the core endeavor to attract competitive and committed student talent to transform into efficient teachers. One of the key highlights of the Integrated Teacher Education Programme is that it keeps the students grounded and closer to the Indian ethos, values, cultures, and traditions. ITEP helps students understand Indian languages and their diversity. It lends them an immense opportunity to be exposed to modern, effective, and experiential pedagogy and teaching advancements.

ITEP Program Course Details

ITEP, as notified on 26 October 2021, is a 4 Year dual-major holistic undergraduate degree offering B.A. B.Ed./ B. Sc. B. Ed. and B.Com. B.Ed. This course will prepare teachers for the 4 stages of the new school structure i.e. Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary (5+3+3+4).

ITEP Course Details

As per the government of India, release:

The ITEP is being offered in pilot mode initially in reputed Central/State Government Universities/Institutions. The Integrated Teacher Education Programme will be available for all students who choose teaching as a profession after their secondary, by choice. This integrated course will benefit students since they will save one year by finishing the course in 4 years rather than the customary 5 years required by the present B.Ed. plan. Admission for the same will be carried out by the National Testing Agency (NTA) through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET).

ITEP Program Eligibility

The four-year ITEP can be availed by any student who wishes to make teaching a career after secondary, by choice. ITEP will be an integrated course will lend immense benefit to students who can save one year by finishing it in four years, in comparison to the regular five years, as per the present BEd plan.

ITEP or Integrated Teacher Education Programme is touted to be a cornerstone and a crucial step towards achieving the major mandates and aims of the latest National Education Policy. It is expected to fill the gaps that were left in the earlier policies and practices and is completely outcome-oriented, where complete training for teachers should have a direct and positive bearing on how they impart training to students. This is one of the major highlights of ITEP where thorough focus has been laid on devising impacting pedagogy and advanced teaching methods, that in turn prepare them to deliver academics more efficiently to their students.

The agency responsible for the National Common Education Programme

The National Testing Agency will be responsible for conducting the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) for admission to the 4-Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) in selected Central / State Universities / Institutions including IITs, NITs, RIEs, and Government Colleges. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a Statutory Body of the Government of India under the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education (MoE).

NTA will be involved in candidates’ registration, conducting tests, answer keys, inviting challenges, and finalizing answer keys, results, and scorecards. It is the participating universities, institutions, and colleges that shall hold counseling for candidates, based on the NCET 2023 scorecard from NTA.
