In 1896, British Christian pastor Lawhead founded the Christian "Boji Hospital" (later renamed "Huimin Hospital") in "Weihui Prefecture" (now Weihui City under the jurisdiction of Xinxiang City, Henan Province). "Boji Hospital" not only provides medical services but also provides short-term training for medical assistants in various disciplines. In 1922, Canadian missionary Genet Wittliff founded the four-year Huimin Hospital Nursing School here, dedicated to cultivating modern medical nursing talents.

In June 1949, with the advancement of the War of Liberation, the Health School of the Hebei-Shandong-Henan Administrative Office, established in 1947, and the Harry Life Hospital moved from Zhangqiu, Shandong to Weihui. The Harry Life Hospital merged with the former Huimin Hospital to form the Pingyuan Provincial Hospital.

In January 1950, the Education Department and Health Department of Pingyuan Province decided to establish Pingyuan Medical School on the basis of the Health School. Pingyuan Hospital was the affiliated hospital of the Medical School. The first president was Li Yi, then Director of the Pingyuan Health Bureau. In May of the same year, the school enrolled the first batch of students. This was the predecessor of Xinxiang Medical College.

Since then, the school has undergone several changes and went through development stages such as the Second North China Medical School, Jixian Medical School, Jixian Health School, Xinxiang Special District Medical College, Jixian Medical College, and Northern Henan Medical College.

In 1982, the school was upgraded to an undergraduate institution with the approval of the State Council and named Xinxiang Medical College. At the same time, a new campus was built in Xinxiang City.

In 1991, the school moved its main campus from Weihui to Xinxiang.

In 1996, it passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation organized by the former State Education Commission.

In 1998, the school was granted the right to award master's degrees.

In 2006, the undergraduate teaching level of the university was evaluated by the Ministry of Education and the evaluation conclusion was excellent.

About the School:Xinxiang Medical College is located in Xinxiang City, Henan Province. It is the only independent western medicine undergraduate college in Henan Province. The origin of the school can be traced back to the western medicine clinic opened by Dr. Luo Weiling in the ancient city of Weihui in 1896. Medical education began in 1922 at the Huimin Hospital Nursing School, which enrolled four-year nursing students and awarded diplomas by the Chinese Nursing Association (named "Chinese Nurses Association" in 1923). In 1949, the Jiluyu Health School and Harrison Hospital moved in, and the Pingyuan Provincial Medical School was established in 1950. The school has gone through the development stages of North China Second Medical School, Henan Jixian Medical School, and Xinxiang District Medical College. In 1962, it was renamed Yubei Medical College; in 1982, it was upgraded to undergraduate and named Xinxiang Medical College; in 1996, it passed the undergraduate teaching work qualification evaluation organized by the former State Education Commission; in 1998, it obtained the right to confer master's degrees; in 2006, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education and obtained excellence; in 2016, it was praised by the expert group in the review and evaluation of the undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education; in 2016, it became a supporting university of the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" National 100 Central and Western Colleges and Universities Basic Capacity Building Project; in 2018, it successfully passed the Ministry of Education's clinical medicine professional certification; in 2020, it was approved as a national higher education discipline innovation and intelligence base ("111 Project"); in 2021, it was approved as a key project construction unit of the only doctoral degree-granting institution in Henan Province; in 2022, it was approved as a national regional mental medical center.

The university offers various types of education, including full-time education, Sino-foreign cooperative education and continuing education, and has a relatively complete talent training system for graduate students, undergraduates, international students, etc. It currently has more than 15,000 faculty and staff (including 5 clinical colleges), nearly 30,000 students of various types, 15 affiliated hospitals, and has established 4 domestic and foreign publicly issued publications, 2 of which are national Chinese core journals.

The school adheres to characteristic development. It has a full range of majors, covering seven disciplines including medicine, science, management, engineering, literature, law and education. There are 36 undergraduate majors, 15 national and provincial characteristic majors, 23 first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 64 first-class undergraduate courses. The number of students enrolled in five-year medical majors has accounted for more than half of the province for many years, supporting half of the higher medical education in Henan Province. Pediatrics is one of the first eight universities in the country to resume enrollment in pediatrics.

The school attaches great importance to discipline construction. It has 2 national key clinical specialties, 1 national key TCM specialties, 1 Henan Province Class A characteristic discipline group, 2 Henan Province characteristic backbone disciplines, 1 Henan Province special and urgent characteristic backbone discipline, and 22 provincial key disciplines and medical key disciplines. The medical technology discipline was rated B in the fifth round of discipline evaluation, and basic medicine and psychology were listed in the 2022 and 2023 Soft Science "China's Best Discipline Ranking" respectively. There are 12 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 10 professional degree master's degree authorization points, and 22 master's students have been trained. It has the largest biological sample library of mental illness in the country, and tuberculosis has ranked first in the province and ninth in the country in the past five years. The clinical medicine discipline entered the top 3.623‰ of the ESI global ranking, and the pharmacology and toxicology and biology and biochemistry disciplines entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school's ESI comprehensive ranking ranks 34th among medical universities in the country.
