It used to be that the phrase, "used car dealership" brought to mind smarmy salesmen dressed in polyester suits with butterfly collars - and they usually had names like Larry or Eddie. A used car dealership was somewhere you went as a last resort, if you couldn't get an auto loan or could only afford a hoopty. Thankfully, those days are long gone and used car dealerships are now respectable places to find great deals on used automobiles. However, just like any other business, not all used car dealerships are created equally. You may still come across the occasional Larry or Eddie, but this is a throwback rarity rather than business as usual. The good news is now that most dealerships are online, sorting out the good, the bad and the ugly is a lot easier. It's also easier to research the values on the types of cars you're looking for so you won't get stuck paying more than fair market value. Check out the following list of tips that will help you know what to look for, both online and off, in a used car dealership.

  • A good reputation. One of the best ways to find any kind of business is through word of mouth recommendations. Chances are a friend, family member, gym buddy or coworker will know of a reputable used car dealership or has some type of experience - good or bad - to share. Going online is another good way to see who is saying what about your local used car dealerships. Sites like Yelp often have honest, detailed reviews about local businesses. It doesn't hurt to take a quick look at the Better Business Bureau's (BBB) website to make sure there aren't any open complaints against a particular dealership.
  • A searchable website. While there may be some used car dealerships out there that haven't gone online, the majority of them have. When you look at a dealership's website, see if they have a comprehensive search tool that will let you specify the make, model and year range of the vehicle you're looking for. Some sites will also let you search by price, mileage, condition and body style. You can also get an idea of the types of services the dealership offers. Speaking of...
  • The services you need and want. Are you going to need financing? What about parts and service? Many used car dealerships offer the same services you would expect a new car dealership to offer. It can be especially convenient and rewarding to build a relationship at a
family owned dealership where you not only buy a car, but have it serviced and maintained. That way, the dealership is familiar with your car and its maintenance records, and can make better recommendations for service options down the line.

  • A good first impression. There's only so much you can learn about a dealership online. At some point you do need to actually visit the lot. When you do, take a good look around. Is the lot clean and organized? Are the cars clean and in good repair? Does the staff dress and act in a professional manner? Are the showroom, office and service area clean? The vibe you get when you first step on the lot can go a long way toward letting you know what type of establishment the dealership is running.
  • Great customer service. This is one of the most important aspects of a great used car dealership. You should be treated with courtesy and respect every step of the way. If not, find another dealership.
