Handy Tips For Beginners That Want To Plant And Grow A Vegetable Garden
Posted: Feb 27, 2015
Vegetable gardening can be an amazing hobby for everyone irrespective of age. Usually when beginners start this hobby they may worry that they do not have the experience or knowledge to garden successfully. Gardening can be both easy and enjoyable if you are willing to learn. Take some important steps to gain knowledge on how to garden successfully. Fortunately there are plenty of tips available from thegardener.co.za that will help you become an avid gardener.
- Decide what veggies you would like to grow: you will require warm weather for some produce while other vegetables may require a cooler climate. The area you reside in and the seasonal weather will often play a crucial role when deciding which veggies to plant. Cabbage, beans and peas usually require cooler climates. These plants require an adequate amount of time to flourish before the climate turns warm otherwise they may perish or seed before time. Tomatoes, cucumbers, gourds and sweet corn will grow better in warmer weather. They require moderate temperatures between 25-35 degrees Celsius.
- Look for an appropriate location in your garden to plant your vegetables. The point you select for growing the vegetables should be an area that will not lead to any disruption or inconvenience to you.
- When you have chosen a vegetable, study the quality of soil in the garden area selected for planting. Ensure that the soil is in a good condition for the vegetables.
- The area selected should get a good amount of sun and sufficient fresh air. Ideally, your vegetable garden should get 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. Sunlight provides energy to the plants which helps them to turn carbon dioxide into sugar which the plants will utilize as food. If the plants do not get an adequate amount of sunlight, they may not bear fruits even if the plants appear to be green and flourishing. Carrots, tomatoes, radishes, onions and beetroots require at most 6-8 hours of direct sunlight on a daily basis. Plants like lettuce can grow decently in the shade and don’t necessarily require direct sunlight. They may however require some protection if they are exposed to extremely hot sunlight.
