In this day and age, a college education is crucial to ensure a bright future. Simply attending college, however, is not enough. Before you choose what you'll major in when you go to college, take a look at what jobs are available in your area. You don't want to get out of school and only be able to get jobs that are below your skill level. Consider saving to relocate if you have to after getting out of school.

You should not consider going to college unless you have a good idea of the kind of career you want or at least have a general idea. Meet with a career counselor to find out more about your different options and take the time to do some research about different schools and programs.

If you recently entered college, one of the first things that you should do is purchase your books from the bookstore. This will help you to reduce the stresses that you will face as the year begins, as you should always come prepared with the right materials and texts for school.

Avoid studying for big college exams the night before by taking in a lot of caffeine or other stimulants. While these things can keep you up and able to study for longer, they will make you very tired in the morning. After using chemical stimulants for a while, you will need more and more and that can be damaging to your overall physical and mental health.

Make the effort to get to know each of your instructors. Use office hours to visit each instructor at least once during the term. If the instructor is teaching a class in your major or intended major, spend more time in office hours. When you need a letter of recommendation, it will be easier if your instructors know you.

Take a general education class your first semester. Any class required for graduation that does not enthuse you should be passed early on to free up class slots later in your college years that you will enjoy more. It would be a bummer to be the token senior in a gen-ed class of freshmen four years down the road.
