Since the discovery of the use of x-rays in medical care, dentist professionals, among other specialists, have used the imaging equipments based on the technology to gain more accurate diagnostics and have a more detailed treatment planning. The development of dental imaging technology is dedicated to provide the best possible imaging tools for professionals. In recent decades, after digital dental radiology was first outlined in France, the digital dental imaging has gone to be the most prominent technology in the aid of dentist professionals. Most of the professionals and private and public clinics have resorted to this technology.

However, the technology has similarities as well with its predecessors, as the digital imaging systems require the exposure for x-rays in similar fashion as the conventional imaging system does. But contrary to the traditional, film based imaging systems, the exposure for the patient can be determined in much more detailed scale with digital system, and thus the dose for the patient can be reduced.

If the conventional film based x-ray technology was and still is rather starchy to use and need some special expertise, for example in how to develop the film based images in dark room with different kinds of chemicals, the digital dental imaging technology provides numerous benefits for dental treatment, for example with sharp digital images. By facilitating the diagnostics the digital dental systems provide better perspective on prognosis and treatment planning and thus the patient receives better care and treatment.

The obvious reason for opting for digital dental technology is the seamless workflow it provides. The film based images are produced in a dark room, whereas the images produced by digital dental imaging system are displayed instantly on screen. Images can be shared as well by sending them over the digital networks and thus the collaboration between professionals becomes much more simple when the sharing happens in seconds instead of transporting physical images from specialist to specialist. The technology allows as well a design that reduces the need for large spaces to carry out the production of the physical images. It is no surprise, at professionals round the world at dental clinics and research centres as well are opting for digital imaging systems.
