Burning of oil is itself a serious thing. The oil used in the engine is its very vital part because the oil helps the engine to work. Without oil, the condition of the engine would be like water for the human body. The oil consists of its system where it is stored, pumped and processed. So, in a vehicle, there are arrangements to protect the oil in better way. But still it the oil gets burned heavily then it is a sign of something worse at the oil system or the engine. So, you have known the cause of the problem and also how to stop the unnecessary burning of oil in the engine. Here you will know about the causes of excessive burning of the oil and what to do if this problem occurs.

The high oil consumption in Jaguar

The oil is one of the most vital components of engine. The oil circulates throughout the engine to reach all the moving mechanical parts. These mechanical parts while working offer friction which opposes their movement. The friction also leads to more heat production when these parts move against the friction. This heat is the result of the energy lost due to the action of the engine against the friction and hence the engine uses more fuel. But many amounts of energy produced from the fuel is converted to heat and lead to loss. So, this loss is minimized by the use of oil. The oil first of all reaches to various parts and lubricate them. The lubrication lowers the friction and due to low friction, the energy gets less wasted and also less consumed to give a better performance.

The oil is a fluid hence stored in its tank. When the engine runs, the oil pump sends enough oil to the engine. The engine oil comes back to the tank after circulation. During the flow of oil in the engine, a very small amount of oil is consumed by the different parts of engine. This consumed oil is lost through little seepage into the combustion chambers or through the heat of the engine components. You can get to know about the oil at the computer area of the car where messages come up. You can know if the oil is consumed more or less by checking the oil level with time. Sometimes due to some issues, the oil gets excessively consumed and the car would warn you about the oil level even in a very less time after top up of oil.

Another sign of high oil consumption is the gray bluish smoke from the engine or from the exhaust. This smoke is the result of burning of oil.

Here are some common causes of the high oil consumption.

Bad oil filter housing

The oil filter housing keeps the filter in its place and prevent the leakage of the bad oil into the engine. This housing can get some damages and make the oil to leak to certain places of engine where it shouldn’t. the oil gets excess heat from the engine and burns.

Bad valve cover gasket

The valve cover gasket allows the oil to reach to the engine valves to lubricate them but prevent the oil flow into the cylinders. This gasket may wear and damaged, leading to the leakage of oil into the cylinders where the oil is burned in place of fuel.

Oil pan gasket

The oil pan is the place where the oil is stored. This pan is located at the bottom of the car and exposed to moisture, road debris, extreme temperatures and hence get the gasket damaged and make the oil leak.

What to do?

Basically, if the oil is excessively burned, then it might be due to leakage of oil. But mostly the internal leakages make such things happen. you have to just check the hood to know more about the leak. You may get the blue smoke or the burning oil smell. If you are confident enough that the oil is abnormally burning, then get your oil system components and the engine checked.

Check the oil filter and its housing. The dirty filter is to be replaced and it the housing appears oily, leaky, then you can replace it. Then check the valve cover gasket. The leaky gasket is harmful and hence it has to be replaced.

Then check the oil pan gasket at the bottom of the car. If it appears damaged, ten remove it and install a new gasket.

Conclusion

Get the faulty components replaced at the jaguar service centers for better results. To protect your engine for long, you have to get rid of the oil issues and for that regular maintenance is must.

If your Jaguar XF is burning oil abnormally, check for leaks, inspect the PCV valve, use the correct oil, look for exhaust smoke, and get a mechanic to diagnose potential engine or turbo issues.
