Family of Pigments

A pigment is a chemical compound that reflects the light falling on it and imparts it a color depending upon its selective wavelength absorption properties. Different materials can be given a color by adding this chemical to them. Therefore, it has been extensively used in inks, paints, cosmetics, fabrics and many other products for years. Depending on the source of derivation and molecular composition, pigments can be classified into different segments. Some of them have been discussed in this article:

1. Organic Pigments: Organic pigments are the earliest known pigments derived from animal and plant products. These were initially used for bodily ornaments, textile dying and cosmetics, but nowadays organic pigments are also used by modern companies for paint and plastic products. These pigments are absolutely environment friendly and can be used for various purposes.
2. Ultramarine Pigments: Ultramarine Pigments are mostly found in blue color; thus also called Ultramarine Blue Pure Pigment and were earlier used as the finest and most expensive blue paint by Renaissance painters, which were later substituted by synthetic compounds. Nowadays these pigments are used for manufacturing cosmetics, inks, coatings, textiles and paints.
3. Phthalocyanine Pigments: Phthalocyanine Pigments were first developed in the mid-1930s. This pigment is favored for its superior properties such as light fastness, covering power and resistance to effects of acids and alkalis. The Phthalocyanin Blue Pigment is commonly used in paints and dyes. It is insoluble in water and most of the solvents. This pigment is widely used in manufacturing of cyan printing inks.
4. Quinacridone Pigments: Quinacridone Pigments produce seven types of bright and intense colors ranging from yellow to violet. These pigments have excellent bleed and heat resistance and a bright and vibrant tone. They find use in outdoor paints, inkjet toners, textiles etc.
5. Inorganic Pigments: Pigments made up of mineral compounds are known as Inorganic Pigments. They are extracted from the Earth’s bed and may contain iron oxide and hydroxide present in the soil. These pigments are used for imparting colors in different compounds and are available in the form of powder, paste and slurries.

While most of the pigments are used for similar applications in the same industries, what differs them are their properties like color fastness, stability and permanence, along with suitability for different types of materials.
