Importance of Regular BMW Brake Maintenance
Posted: Mar 30, 2025
The use of the brakes is already known to everyone. Because the brakes are the basic components for every vehicle but it’s a very useful part as well. So useful that you cannot even imagine driving safely without the use of brakes. Just like the engine should be there in the vehicle, the brake should also be there in each and every vehicle. Such an essential component of the vehicle are the brakes and hence their maintenance is also a very essential thing among the service of many parts. The problems with the brakes are one of the most serious issues which cannot be ignored. If you have a BMW and you have to avoid the road accidents by your car, then this article is for you. Here you will know about the importance of the brake maintenance of BMW.
Why brake maintenance is so important?
Every component of the car which has some use and have importance, then it has to be maintained. Be it the windows or the stereo or the interior lights, they all have some use and they need maintenance, then why not the brakes. Brakes are the essential and very much required for the vehicles because the brake makes the vehicle to stop and slow down during emergency. Just like the running of the car with power is required, the stopping of the car is also required to reach your destination which is carried out by the brakes. So, brakes are so much essential for the vehicles and they need maintenance.
Brakes are of various types depending on the type of its construction or working. In cars, the disc and the drum brakes are commonly used. They may differ this way but their work is same; to slow down or stop the movement of the wheels in order to stop the vehicle in the disc type brakes, the rotors are in the form of a metallic disc that are attached to the wheels and they rotate with the wheels. In drum brakes, there is a rotor drum in each wheel. When the brake pedal is pressed, the brake pads having friction layer goes towards the rotors and comes in contact with it to make it slow down.
When you press the brake pedals, a pressure is given to the brake fluid stored in the reservoir of the braking system. The fluid immediately runs though the lines to the brake calipers located each in every wheel. The pressure from the fluid makes the brake pads get pushed forward towards the rotors. Due to the fluid pressure, the brake pads come in contact with the rotor and forcefully try to slow it down which slows down the wheels. So, the brake system is generally a mechanical hydraulic system and any damage to the brake parts can lead to brake failure. The brake failure cannot make the car to slow down when the brake pedal is pressed. The brake system simply fails to do its work while you have to stop the car, the car would not stop and simply get hit with other vehicles or any pedestrian on road.
Here are some problems in the braking system which can be prevented by maintenance.
Bad brake fluid
The brake fluid in the system can become too old and they cannot able to carry out their work, they can form sludge. So, by the brake maintenance the brake fluid is checked and changed.
Fluid leakage
Any damage at the fluid lines can lead to leakage of the fluid and the fluid level becomes too low that there would not be enough pressure and applying the brakes would not work.
Worn brake pad
The brake pad can get worn with time due to its slipping on the rotors. The worn brake pad lacks the ability to slow down the rotor and it can damage the rotor. So, during the maintenance, the brake pad is checked and replaced with a new brake pad.
Damaged rotor
The rotors can get damaged and lead to some strange sounds while you apply brakes. It can be overheated. So, by the brake system maintenance, the damaged brake rotor is replaced with new and suitable brake rotor for the wheels.
Conclusion
To maintain a good health of the braking system to have the brakes function well, you have to maintain it regularly, this would protect your car by preventing brake failures.
