The Role of RBT, BCBA, BCaBA

Posted: Apr 04, 2025
What is a Registered Behavior Technician™?• An RBT™ is a paraprofessional who practices under the supervision of a BCBA™ or BCaBA™.• The RBT’s primary responsibility is the direct implementation of treatment plans developed by the supervisor.• The RBT™ may also collect data and conduct certain types of assessments• The RBT™ does not design intervention or assessment plans. It is the responsibility of the des- ignated RBT™ supervisor to determine which tasks an RBT™ may perform as a function of his or her training, experience, and competence.
Topics cover all areas outlined within the RBT™ Task List• Measurement• Assessment• Skill Acquisition• Behavior Reduction• Documentation and Reporting• Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice
What is the BACB™?• The Behavior Analyst Certification Board™, Inc. (BACB™) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation established in 1998 to meet professional credentialing needs identified by behavior analysts, governments, and consumers of behavior analysis services.
Board Certified Behavior Analyst™ (BCBA™, BCBA-DTM)• The BCBA™ and BCBA-D™ are independent practitioners who also may work as employees or independent contractors for an organization• The BCBA™ conducts descriptive and systematic behavioral assessments, including functional analyses, and provides behavior analytic interpretations of the results.• The BCBA™ designs and supervises behavior analytic intervention and is able to effectively de- velop and implement appropriate assessment and intervention methods for use in unfamiliar situations and for a range of cases.• BCBAs supervise the work of Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts™ and others who im- plement behavior analytic interventions, such as RBT’s.
Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst™ (BCaBA™)• The BCaBA™ conducts descriptive behavioral assessments and is able to interpret the results and design ethical and effective behavior analytic interventions for clients• The BCaBA™ designs and oversees interventions in familiar cases (e.g., similar to those encoun- tered during their training) that are consistent with the dimensions of applied behavior analysis• The BCaBA™ is able to teach others to carry out interventions and supervise behavioral tech- nicians once the BCaBA™ has demonstrated competency with the procedures involved under the direct supervision of a BCBA™.
Chain of service delivery• Whereas individuals with the BCBA™ and BCBA-D™ credentials are generally responsible for service-delivery oversight, and individuals with the BCaBA™ credential generally operate in a position assisting these supervisors, individuals with the RBT™ credential will be responsible for implementing, not designing, the behavior plans designed by their supervisorsrbt practice exam
RBT™ role defined• RBT™ Task List• RBT™ roles would include but not limited to:• Prepare data collection, implement measurement and recording procedures, and maintain data.• Assist with student assessment procedures (e. g., curriculum-based, developmental, social skills, assist with functional assessment procedures, observational recording of behavior and environment).• Implement a variety of teaching procedures (e. g., discrete trial, naturalistic teaching, stimu- lus control, stimulus fading, discrimination training, use of contingency reinforcement).• Understand essential components of a behavior plan and implement behavioral reduction in-terventions (e. g., differential reinforcement procedures, extinction procedures).• Responsible for accurate documentation and reporting and effective communication with supervisor.• Manage student behavior utilizing de-escalation and support hold training techniques.• Ability to use computer technology and knowledge of various software programs (e. g., Excel, Microsoft word) and willingness to lean new software and use of adaptive equipment as ap- propriate.• Meet student and environmental needs as required (e. g., lifting, bending, crawling, squat- ting, reaching, toileting, feeding, self-help skills, assisting with personal hygiene needs, and other duties as appropriate).• Openly flexible and responsible in working with multiple children at one time, when neces- sary.• Become fluent in the understanding of the appropriate assessments such as the Verbal Behav- ior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP).• Assists in the creation of instructional materials.• Effectively responds to and manages crisis situations which may include physical aggression.
