Posted: Apr 17, 2025
As you know how much essential are the brakes for the vehicles. Without brakes, there would be high chances of accidents as you could not be able to slow or stop the car when required. You might have noticed a light at the rear of the car which starts to glow when you apply the brakes. It is called a s a brake light and it’s also a very important safety component of the car like the brakes. It prevents various road hazards. The brake light is controlled by the brake light switch. Here you will know in detail about the effects of the failure of the brake switch in your car.
The brake light switch
Whenever the brakes are pressed in a vehicle, the brake lights at the rear glows. Basically, this is a very important process as it makes the fellow drivers know that you have pressed the brakes and slowing down so that they can safely avoid hitting your car. Just like the turn indicator lights make the fellow drivers to know about the direction you are going to turn your vehicle, similarly the brake lights let the divers behind you to know your intentions. Whether a car is braking or not, it cannot be properly known to other drivers while they are driving. Sio there is a high possible chance to get their car hit suddenly at the back of your car, which can lead to injuries of your car.
All lights are made to glow and turn off by the help of switches. The brake light uses electricity from the battery but it glows only when the brakes are pressed. They are controlled by a switch called as the brake light switch which is linked to the brake pedals. When you press the pedals, the switch is turned on by the force of your foot, when you release the pedal, the brake light switch turns off and the bulb goes off.
The dangers of the brake light switch failure
The importance of the brake light switch is linked to the purpose of the brake light. The brake light turns on and off to let the drivers behind you know when you are applying the brakes and when you aren't. the brake lights act as the signals from your car to other drivers to make them slow down when you apply brakes in order to prevent the collision.
The brake light is glowing when you press the brakes and not glowing when you release brakes, this is done by the brake light switch. What if the brake light switch would malfunction. Then the brake light would give wrong signals to the other drivers and the chances of accidents would increase.
Apart from direct safety, the brake light switch also controls the other safety systems like ABS and the vehicle stability control, these systems depend on the brake light switch activity to get to know if the brakes are applied or not. They cannot know when the brake is applied and when not if the brake light switch is not working. Hence, they would not work when they are in need. Both the ABS and the vehicle stability system help the car to be stable and gain the control over the car to avoid any disasters on roads. If the both systems would not work, then the chances of accidents would increase.
Another danger is that the transmission would not come out of park if the brake light switch is faulty. So, you cannot drive your car if the transmission is in park. In cars having push button to start, the button would not work if the brake light switch is malfunctioning. So ultimately a bad brake light switch can make the car very unsafe to drive.
Conclusion
To avoid these risks and dangers, you have to repair or replace the brake light switch at any authorized repair shops.
