Nagpur, known for its oranges and central location, is rapidly emerging as India’s new hotspot for solar manufacturing. With a combination of geographic advantage, government incentives, and industrial development, the city is steadily transforming into a solar energy hub that is drawing the attention of some of the biggest names in the renewable energy sector.

Geographic & Strategic Advantages

Located in the heart of India, Nagpur offers unmatched logistical benefits. It’s well-connected by rail, road, and air, making the transportation of raw materials and finished solar components easier and more cost-effective. Furthermore, the region receives over 300 sunny days annually, making it ideal for solar research, testing, and implementation.

The government of Maharashtra, in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has also introduced favorable policies, land subsidies, and faster clearances to promote solar investment in the Vidarbha region.

Avaada Energy’s Game-Changing Facility

One of the most significant developments in Nagpur’s solar landscape is the launch of Avaada Energy’s high-tech solar module manufacturing plant at Butibori MIDC. This facility is the first in India to produce 720Wp TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) modules, featuring advanced G12 (210mm) cells with high efficiency and long-term durability.

Key Highlights:

  • Current Manufacturing Capacity: 1.5 GW
  • Planned Expansion: Up to 7 GW by July 2025
  • Technology Used: G12 solar cell design with N-Type TOPCon architecture
  • ALMM Certification: Included in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers

This plant not only boosts India’s domestic solar manufacturing but also reduces dependence on Chinese imports — aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative.

Other Key Players and Industrial Growth

Following Avaada’s lead, other solar energy leaders like Reliance New Energy, Waaree Energies, and local pioneers like Galaxy Solar Energy and Ksquare Energy are expanding operations in Nagpur. The city’s industrial zones, such as MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) and Butibori MIDC, are seeing a surge in solar-related activity.

Employment & Economic Benefits

The growth of the solar manufacturing industry is creating thousands of jobs in engineering, manufacturing, logistics, and solar installation. Additionally, technical institutions in Nagpur are starting specialized training programs to produce a skilled solar workforce.

Sustainability & National Impact

Nagpur’s rise as a solar hub is helping India move closer to its ambitious 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030. It is also setting an example for other Tier-2 cities to become clean energy centers that contribute to climate action and carbon neutrality.

Conclusion

As global demand for clean, sustainable energy continues to grow, Nagpur is positioning itself as a vital player in India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem. With ongoing investments, government support, and world-class technology, the city is no longer just a regional industrial center—it is on its way to becoming India’s Solar Capital.
