Wedding dress ball postponed after organiser suffers shock illness

A WEDDING dress charity ball had to be cancelled after the main organiser suffered a suspected heart attack.

The red carpet event, planned for Chaldon's Surrey National Golf Club on Friday, had received almost 70 bookings.

Many of them were former brides and bridesmaids who planned to dress up once again in all their finery for the special occasion.

But the eagerly awaited function was postponed just a few days beforehand after Charmaine Corcoran, the main inspiration behind the glamorous evening, fell seriously ill.

Mrs Corcoran, 30, suffered the suspected heart attack after a bout of pneumonia.

Selena Goldsmith is a regional fundraiser for the Action for Children charity, which was due to benefit from the charity night.

She said: "The past week has been manic and it was decided to postpone the ball until a later date.

"Charmaine was rushed into hospital with a suspected heart attack. It was such a shock and a massive shame after all the work she had put into organising the event.

"We didn't feel we could go ahead without her.

"It was a difficult decision to postpone it – some guests had booked places to link up with their own wedding anniversaries."

She said thankfully Mrs Corcoran is back at home now.

The event will be re-staged when Mrs Corcoran feels ready to proceed, she added.

Proceeds from the event will go to Pastens children's home in Pains Hill, Oxted, which looks after youngsters with severe physical disabilities and/or learning difficulties.

Last month Mrs Corcoran, who works at Pastens, told how she came up with the idea of the ball, with herself and others wearing their wedding dresses again, after watching a TV programme.

She explained: "I was thinking what a shame it was to spend so much money on a dress that you only get to wear once.

"Lots of people told me some women wear their dresses while watching TV, just for a chance to wear it again.

"After speaking to some close friends we thought it would be a great idea to host an event so we could wear our dresses again and raise money for a great cause."
