This is one Tag heuer watch that we are very much looking forward to seeing in person to assess
Posted: Apr 02, 2015
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new Link model, but here is a new addition to the range- the TAG Heuer Link Calibre 18. The new model is a slim-line two-register automatic chronograph and is the first model to use TAG Heuer’s Calibre 18 movement. What is the Calibre 18? {http://www.ttpizza.com} model in the mechanical chronograph Link range, a more elegant model positioned above the sporty Calibre 16 Chronograph. The key differentiation between the two watches goes beyond the 3-register vs. 2-register dial layout- the new Link has gone on a diet.
This is one watch that we’re very much looking forward to seeing in person to assess the balance of the dial (the "closeness" of the sub-dials appears less of an issue in the photo above) and whether the smaller and slimmer case makes a meaningful difference on the wrist. Late last year we brought you the first photos of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 72 Countdown- a new chronograph that features a Countdown chronograph complication designed for sailing. We’ve now had the {http://www.tubatis.com} chance to spend a week with the two models to bring you a more detailed review of the latest Aquaracer. There are two options in the Calibre 72 range- the standard Aquaracer 500m Calibre 72 (below right) and a Limited Edition "Oracle Team USA" model which marks TAG Heuer’s sponsorship of the team defending the America’s Cup later this year in San Francisco.
One of the least-understood features of this watch is the countdown function- used in Sailing. Also known as a "Regatta function", the timer is used to help skippers manoeuvre their boat in the 15 minutes before a race starts so that they are in the perfect position to cross the start line as soon as the 15 minutes is over and the race starts- that’s why the timer counts backwards. The starting point for understanding how this works is to know that the "Regatta disc" is a disc divided into three equal segments. Each disc lasts for 5 minutes. Some races allow the yachts to manoeuvre for 5 minutes before the start- others allow 10 or 15 minutes. The example below shows how a 10-minute countdown works on the Oracle Edition model.
One of the biggest issues with the linear rotor (meant to remind the wearer of a car engine's piston) is the shock on both ends of the weight. There is no shock when a circle spins around endlessly, but a weight {http://www.toaclan.com} such as this must hit each side countless times each day. TAG Heuer expressed particular disdain at the recollection of having to design a solution to ensure this did not wear out the movement quickly. With four mainspring barrels, the rear of the movement looks a bit like a V4 engine which is the source of the watch's name. It also has about 42 hours of power reserve. This is, of course, the first Monaco V4 to come in a non-metallic case. Previous models were produced in platinum, gold, or titanium. It is quite light, but feels very solid. In case you were wondering, water resistance is 50 meters. According to TAG Heuer this ref. WAW2041.FC6288 was produced specially for Eastern Europe - specifically the Crystal Group, which I believe is a distributor that works with regional luxury stores in Ukraine. And yes, that means a lot of illegitimate money going to luxury goods - perhaps the most excited money around when it comes to buying luxury goods. This very rare all carbon-cased TAG Heuer Monaco V4 watch was a limited edition of just 10 pieces..
