Back Pain during Pregnancy and how to deal with it

Back pain during pregnancy is good news (not the pain ways!) but it is a symptom that baby is growing. During pregnancy back is very common and it usually starts in the second half of the pregnancy. Just do not panic it is going to be fine. Have a look at what are the causes of such pain and how you can deal with it.

The causes of back pain during pregnancy

During pregnancy the pain occurs at the sacroiliac joint, it is point where pelvis meets the spine. There are number of causes for this pain, usually which include:

  • Gain of weight

During a pregnancy a healthy women is tend to gain 25-35 pounds. This increased weight is supported by the spine which usually causes pain in lower back. Growing baby’s weight along with uterus pressurizes the nerves and blood vessels causing pain.

  • Change in posture

Pregnancy leads to shift of center of gravity in women, which results in change of posture. You will not even realize this change as it happened naturally. This can also be a cause of pain in back.

  • Hormone changes

Production of relaxin a hormone which ligaments to relax in the pelvic area and loses joints to help with the birth process can result in back pain. This is because the same hormone can cause ligaments supporting spinal cord to loosen causing instability.

  • Muscle separation

The separation of the rectal abdominis muscles which run from rib cage to pubic bone may worsen the back pain.

  • Stress

Last but not least in any manner emotional stress can also result into muscle tension causing pain. You can notice that there is spike in back pain during stressful periods of your pregnancy.

Tips for relief

It is not surprising to have back pain during pregnancy but for sure you should pay attention to it. Some of the tips which can help you are listed here.

1. Maintain good posture

Remember we mentioned about shift of center of gravity which can cause poor posture leading to back pain. Solution is to practice good posture.

  • Stand up straight
  • Always hold your chest high
  • Never lock your knees
  • Keep your shoulders relaxed

Taking care of posture will help you to manage pain.

2. Your footwear counts

Wearing low heeled but not flat shoes that also have a good arch support is advisable. Even the maternity support belt can be used but there are very less proofs of its effectiveness.

3. Lift properly

During pregnancy lifting of weights should be very careful. Small objects should only be lifted and with proper posture. Do not bend your waist and put your back under stress instead squat down and makes use of your legs to lift the weight.

4. Sleep properly

Sleeping on your back can cause pain better you sleep on your side. There are pregnancy support pillows available which you can use.

5. Massaging

Hot and cold massage of your back will help you to relieve the pain.

6. Physical Activity

If you keep yourself physically active during pregnancy, this makes your back stronger and avoids pain. Ask your health care provider about mild exercises you can practice.

Management of pregnancy back is not difficult, all it takes is proper care and attention.
