Scott Luker Organized A Basketball Match For Special Needs Children At Cozy Lake School

Scott Luker is the proud founder as well as Director of Jefferson Challenger League, an organization that is dedicating to helping the special needs children. He organizes a plethora of activities for these children, so that they can stay fit and healthy and can have the pleasure of spending quality time with other children of the area. These activities are said to have therapeutic effects on special needs children, and also help in strengthening their self esteem, encouraging their sportsmanship and teamwork, and encouraging them. Scott, along with the Jefferson Township Recreation Department organized a Challenger Basketball and Gym Activities program for these kids in the 2013 winter season.

In this program, the parents of both the boys and girls aged 5 to 18 with mental or physical disabilities were invited. The league was managed by Tom DeVries, a resident of Jefferson Township who is also a respected member of Jefferson Challenger League. Scott Luker described that the activities started in the White Rock Elementary School Gym on January 5th from 9:45 am to 11 am, and continued on Saturdays until February 23rd. Various activities of the program also used to take place on every Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 pm until February 19th. All these events took place at Cozy Lake School, 205 Cozy Lake Road in Oak Ridge. The program gave players a chance to take part in basketball, as well.

The participants played with the same equipment along with the similar rules as in any basketball game, but the only exception was that they had the option to utilize the "buddy" system for help. Each player on the list played in the game, and there was no score kept for these children. Owing to the fundraising efforts by the Director of the league, the normal registration fee for this program was waived for the 5th season. The registration forms for the event were distributed across the Jefferson Township school district and were also placed in the lobby racks at the Jefferson Township Municipal Building as well as the Jefferson Township Public Library.

These forms were for special needs children who wanted to play, manage, serve as a team parent, umpire, an assistant coach, or wished to become a buddy player.
