Veeam Cloud Backup

Veeam as a company decided to provide cloud backup to clients as a faster and more secure way of data storage and recovery from cloud.

Costs

Veeam claims that clients will actually safe money, despite making use of their backup providers. Their reasoning is that their providers provide "leverage cloud backup repository services". Clients may experience a problem with data storage when their cloud has reached it's storage limit.

Why use cloud backup

Cloud backup is a fast, easy and relatively reliable way to ensure that your data is backed up on a server which can be seen as a virtual warehouse. The storage of the data is the responsibility of the hosting company of the specific cloud. The risk of the storage is between both the user and the hosting company. My reasons are as follows: the user should ensure that he/she stores the data on the cloud and can only disconnect from the cloud once the backup has been completed in full. Should the data not be backed up in full, the hosting company cannot be held responsible for the loss of or damage to data stored. If the client has done their part, any loss of or damage to data is the responsibility of the hosting company. It is therefore advisable that the hosting company ensures that data from clients or users are stored safely and securely and they should also have a backup of the client or user's data.

Backup Providers

The backup providers are reputable companies with a good track record in the saving or hosting of data on servers. Their main duty or responsibility is to ensure that client's data are stored safely and securely and that users can access their data anytime from anywhere. It is therefore of the utmost importance that the providers' servers are always online and that there are no glitches in the server. Failure to access or obtain data by clients can have the impact that clients may lose income due to the fact that they cannot access critical data at a specific time.

Costs

The costs involved with obtaining the services of the backup providers will be determined by the needs of the user. Most providers have a structured package with a set fee, although packages can be structured in accordance with the user's needs.

Legal implications or liabilities

It would be interesting to see how courts would look at a user's claim for damages due to the loss of data as a result of the provider's negligence. As far as I know, such a case has not been heard yet. It would be advisable that the providers have a clause in their contract indemnifying them of claim for damages (compensation or otherwise) due to any loss or damage to the client's data.
