Universal Beams: The Versatile Structural Component
Posted: Apr 07, 2015
Also referred as I-sections and H-sections, Universal Beams are widely used in the construction industry. These Beams are available in variety of standard sizes. The depth of a Universal Beam is much greater than its width. Owing to the increased depth, the loading capability of the Beam is higher than Universal columns. Hot or cold rolled Mild Steel is the most commonly used material to make these Beams. These are known for their exceptional durability, corrosion resistance and tensile strength.
What are Universal Beams?
The Beams are named as I and H sections due to I and H shaped appearance of their cross section. Horizontal components of the Universal Beams are known as flanges and the vertical middle section is called as web. These are designed to support heavy weight in one direction. Widely used as a component in floor framing, these Beams are also used with other types of beams when enhanced load bearing capacity is required. A Mild Steel Universal Beam supports more vertical force than a square beam and thus making it the preferred choice in many construction applications.
Variations:
The different variation in the Beams includes length, material, depot of the flanges, length of the web, etc. Different design variations are made in a Beam to carry different loads. When the Universal Beam is longer, it can support more load throughout its length. On the other hand, when the flange of the Universal Beam is wider it can support side movements more. The wide flange Beams are also known as W Beams.
How are Universal Beams installed?
Universal Beams are available in materials like mild steel, aluminium, wood, etc. These Beams are used for additional weight support in construction applications. Different construction techniques require different types of Beams. Different installation machines are used for installing different types of Universal Beams. The key factor to keep in mind while installing these Beams is that these should not be used in applications involving torsion bearing loads. This could lead to twisting of the Beam and rupture of the floor.
Applications:
Mild Steel Universal Beams are extensively used in applications involving heavy loads. These Beams are also used in load bearing walls.
When compared to wooden beam Mild Steel Universal Beam costs more but provide great advantages in terms of strength, durability and load bearing support. For more details, please visit http://www.shrigirirajloha.net/
