Wireless IP Camera is an innovation of modern Surveillance systems. It is a digital video camera commonly used for surveillance purposes. It sends and receives data via a computer network and the Internet. Although most cameras that do this are web-cams, the term "IP camera" is usually applied only to those used for surveillance.

Types of IP cameras :

  • Centralized IP cameras- It requires a central Network Video Recorder (NVR) for handling the recording, video and alarm management.
  • Decentralized IP cameras- It does not require a central Network Video Recorder (NVR), as the cameras have recording function built-in and can record directly to any standard storage media, such as SD cards, NAS (network attached storage) or a Server.

Advantages of Wireless IP Cameras :

  • It has a two-way audio system via a single network of cable that allows users to communicate with what they are seeing.
  • The flexibility of these IP cameras gives it an upper hand over other surveillance cameras. It can be moved around anywhere on a wireless network.
  • IP cameras allow video analytics to be placed in the camera itself that equips it with the ability in analytics solutions.
  • Commands for camera movements such as pan, tilt, or zoom can be given to these IP cameras via a single network.
  • Wireless IP cameras offer secure data transmission through encryption and authentication methods such as WPA, WPA2, TKIP, and AES.
  • Wireless IP cameras used in Surveillance can be remotely accessed. Live video from selected cameras can be viewed from any computer, anywhere, and also from any smart-phones and other devices.
  • Modern Wireless IP Cameras have the ability to operate without a power supply. They can work with the Power over Ethernet protocol.
  • IP camera communication signals are not just electronic voltage; it is numerically decoded as bits and bytes with security features and TCP/IP protocol.

Video Surveillance with Wireless IP cameras has made life and property a lot safer. Any household or businesses with proper Video surveillance is like a fortress that cannot be penetrated by intruders. These Wireless IP Cameras are like the eyes of any security system; even our governments are using it to protect us from any unprecedented threats.
