The Art of Making Men’s Custom Dress Shirts
Posted: Apr 07, 2015
Most creations did not start with a manual or how-to-do-it-yourself textbook. Making tailor-made dress shirts for men is no exception. But over the centuries, the practice of making made to measure dress shirts has been perfected into an art.
For one, it is now an accepted fact that a shirt has several components and parts, each of which can be made in different ways and even from different fabric.
The parts of a shirt are: a one-piece back, two sleeves, possibly cuffs, collar, and two front panels. The material, the cuffs and the collar are usually more the target of attention for those in the business of making custom made dress shirts.
Cotton, wool, silk, and linen are the most common material used in making shirts, although some shirt-makers recently have introduced polyester as well because the material is cheaper. Polyester shirts generally have shorter longevity than those made of cotton.
With cotton being the king of the club, one should consider that there are various types of cotton as well because cotton yarns are weaved in a variety of ways such broadcloth, twill, poplin or oxford, which itself is divided into various categories.
Collar is the main indicator of the formality of a shirt. Most collars are attached to the shirt, although detachable collars are also in use. Of the former, the ones most spoken of are Windsor, Point, and button down, each usually having a specific significance and used for a specific type of event for which the shirt is worn.
Cuffs are more watched for the added style they bring to a shirt. They usually either use button or cufflinks. They differ whether they are single-length or double-length and folded back.
Shirts have been in use for centuries and their role has changed over time. One factor added over the years is the relationship and connection between shirts and suits. Nowadays, the more "influential" and "well-to-do" a person is, the more the shirt and the suit are linked together.
And nowhere is that more apparent in the gamut of sites selling custom dress shirts online, offering not only shirts but associated suits that accompany the person and the occasion.
