Top Tips to Help Prevent Fires from Happening to You
Posted: Apr 10, 2015
Fire. It’s something that happens to someone else, right? That fire engine you see blazing down the street is always going to someone else’s home, never yours. Those smoke alarms you’ve not got round to fitting aren’t that important, because again, fire just isn’t the sort of thing that happens to someone like you. Well guess what? Fire doesn’t discriminate. Fires can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. All it takes is a lapse in concentration for an accident to happen – and who can confidently say they are always 100% on the ball at all times? No one. That’s exactly why ensuring you have as many measures in place will stand you in good stead when it comes to fire.
Here’s what you can do…
1. Install smoke alarms
They’re not expensive, and sometimes you can even get them free from your local fire service. Make sure you –
- Install them properly
- Test them regularly
- Put them in the correct place
Fire alarms are easy to fit, don’t cost a lot, and could save your life, why wouldn’t you?
2. Use Fire Rated Entry Doors
These are doors that have undergone stringent testing and are made from materials that can properly withstand the test of fire. If you want to ensure you buy a fire rated entry door, look for labels on the door that show the manufacturer’s ID, the date the door was made, and also the actual fire rating of the door.
3. Minimize Possible Hazards
If you’re a smoker, or someone else in the building is, don’t smoke inside. This can significantly reduce the possibility of an accidental fire occurring. When you’re cooking meals using the oven or hob always make sure you are close by. Don’t leave sausages cooking under the grill if you’re not there to watch them, and always keep flammable items such as tea towels and oven gloves away from danger zones like the hob.
4. Get your Electrical Equipment Tested
It’s standard practice in places like hotels, but we don’t often think about testing our own electrical appliances. It’s a wise move though and could help minimize the risk of a fire. Get things like kettles, hairdryers, and vacuum cleaners tested and you’ll be doing the right thing.
5. Keep a Fire Extinguisher and Fire Blanket to Hand
As well as installing things like smoke alarms and fire rated entry doors it’s a wise move to think about the last resort. If a fire does break out what will you do? For that reason, it’s common sense to invest in a fire extinguisher and/or a fire blanket. Make sure everyone in the building knows where these items are and you’ll be helping to ensure your building and the people in it are as safe as they can be.
Seeing a fire spiral out of control is scary and it can be hard to think straight in these situations. If you are well prepared though you will be in a much better place to deal with whatever comes your way.
