Why you should support education in Syria
Posted: Apr 11, 2015
One might wonder whether education must be given priority during relief activities in a war affected zone while there are a lot of other things to do with regard to fulfilling the basic necessities of life. The answer to this question is rather a bit complex. We must first acknowledge the fact that every child has the right to education irrespective of the conditions in a society since they should never be penalized for the mistakes of elders. Discontinuing their education and breaks in their learning process will mean a severe setback in their development which is a major blow to their career. Also, education also protects children during times of conflict. While they go to school, children are safeguarded from the grave dangers of child labor, recruitment by anti-social groups, early marriage, exploitation and abuse.
The school system puts some sort of stability in the lives of children and their wellbeing and the capacity to cope up with the situations significantly improve. Through education, we can devise some measures to reduce the impact of conflict situation on their lives. Through schools, it becomes easy to reach out children to find out their real needs and help them out with many things as the schools create a forum to address them directly.
In Syria, a considerable progress has been made in the lines of child education. However, a lot many things need our immediate attention. Also, the support received from international communities is not adequate to meet the large demand in the country. The issues that need to be addressed with regard to education in Syria include the following. The most important expenditure in this line is to replace the damaged and ruined school infrastructure and furniture. The replacement teachers need to be trained. Enhancing the safety and security of the school instrument will motivate more parents to send their children to schools. The educational materials of the children and their food and clothing need to be managed through relief activities. The cost of paying the salaries of teachers will also mean a big chunk of expenditure. Thus, there is a lot of demand and scope for activities in the arena of education in Syria.
Though it is very hard to get the accurate data pertaining to education in an affected country like Syria, the available figures supplied by the UN reports and findings by other groups suggest how big the problem is in the country. Since the conflict, a large number of Syrian ch8ildren have been forced to leave the schools. The continuance of the conflict over every other day means denial of education to the children for a prolonged period of time. If they are never made to go to school, the country is sure to face a severe financial crisis in the near future and in the long run. The grave dangers of the situation will be pronounced prominently much later if education is not given priority now and some concrete measures are taken to send children to schools. Therefore, education support to Syria appears to be one of the most crucial needs forming part of the ongoing relief activities.
