EPDM Rubber Foam and its Characteristics
Posted: Apr 13, 2015
EPDM rubber which is known as ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber, which is a type of synthetic rubber. It is an extremely durable synthetic rubber. This rubber is closely related to ethylene propylene rubber which is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene whereas EPDM rubber foam is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene, and a diene-component. Its two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gas.
It is an elastomer characterized by a wide range of applications Due to the superb air tight and water tight properties of EPDM foam it is generally used within the automotive, electronic and construction trades. It is also a very good material for jointing expansion, weather strips, glazing and closure seals as well as shock absorbers. Nowadays rubber foams have long been considered as an economical material for many applications due to their wide variety of advantageous properties, such as light weight, buoyancy, cushioning performance, acoustic insulation, inertness, and good aging.
The main characteristics includes following:
- Closed cell structure making it impermeable to air and water and therefore an
- ideal material for sealing against air and water.
- Outstanding heat, Ozone and Weather Resistance.
- Resistance to ketone, ordinary diluted acids, and alkaline.
- Outstanding aging properties and will not go brittle over time.
- Resistance to polar substances and steam are also good.
- Very durable and relatively cheap.
- Available in a wide range – high temperature, hard, soft, super soft.
- Good UV resistance.
- Good mechanical properties.
- Wide temperature range.
- Excellent electrical insulating properties
EPDM Rubber foam strips provide excellent seals in a whole host of applications. Furthermore, due to the fantastic aging properties of closed cell EPDM foam it means that the sealing strip functions will not fail over prolonged exposure on a specific application. This rubber is used in seals in door seals, window seals, trunk seals and sometimes hood seals. EPDM is also used in glass-run channels, radiators, garden and appliance hose, tubing, pond liners, washers, belts, electrical insulation, vibrators, O-rings, solar panel heat collectors, and speaker cone surrounds.
This rubber is also used as a medium in water resistance in electrical cable joint, roofing membranes, plastic impact modification thermoplastic and many other applications. Coulored EPDM granules are mixed with polyurethane binders and troweled or sprayed onto concrete, asphalt, screenings, interlocking brick, wood, etc. to create a non-slip, soft, porous safety surface for wet-deck areas such as pool decks and as safety surfacing under playground play equipment. Other uses of EPDM rubber foam includes cooling system circuit hoses where water pumps, thermostats, EGR valves, EGR coolers, heaters, oil coolers, radiators, and degas bottles are connected with EPDM hoses.
